IC134D - Wetted Wall Gas Absorption Column - Code
998104

1. General
The Didacta unit IC134D allows to study how a deoxygenated water flow rate absorbs oxygen from air by using a wetted wall
absorption column.
The unit has been designed to allow the student to understand the basic principles of the chemical-physical process called
absorption; these concepts are very important to learn how to calculate gas/liquid mass transfer coefficients.
The study unit, made of borosilicate glass, is very simple to use and requires very little maintenance.
The unit is supplied with manuals which describe all parts of the trainer, the installation and utilisation procedures, as well as
many exercises with the relative results.
2. Composition
Stainless steel frame.
Oxygenation column made of borosilicate glass: inner diameter 32 mm, height 900 mm.
Deoxygenation column made of borosilicate glass: inner diameter 25 mm, height 1570 mm.
Feeding tank made of corrosion-proof material, capacity 50 l.
No.2 feeding pumps made of corrosion-proof material: max flow rate 1200l/h, max head 2 m w.c..
Air feeding compressor: max flow rate 1440l/h, max head 1 bar.
No. 2 flow meters: max water flow rate 1200 l/h; max nitrogen flow rate 4800 Nl/h.

with resolution 0.1 mg/l or 0 - 600% under saturation conditions with resolution
1%.
3. Description
The operating principle of the unit is very simple: a water flow is deoxygenated by a counter-current flow of nitrogen, coming
from a cylinder of compressed gas, not supplied with the unit. The deoxygenated water flow rate is sent into the wetted wall
column where it is spread on the internal wall, where it meets a counter-current air flow, which is supplied by a compressor.
Water absorbs oxygen from the air thanks to the contact between the two substances.
The oxygen meter allows to measure the dissolved oxygen both after the oxygenation process and after the deoxygenation
process.
4. Experiments
Study of the absorption process.
Study of the mass transfer coefficients.
Effect of water flow rate.
Effect of oxygen flow rate.
