3. Generalization
Ask:
What do two- to three-step word problem contain?
How many processes does a two-step word problem involve? A three-step
word problem?
What does the frst operation answer?
Why is it necessary to answer the hidden question?
Expected Answers
Two- to three-step word problems contain hidden questions.
A two-step word problem involvess two processes. A three-step word
problem involves three processes.
The operation answers the hidden question because we cannot answer
what is asked in the problem without answering the hidden question.
4. Application
Refer to Activity Sheet C Think, Pair, Share.
IV. Evaluation
Use Handout # 3.
V. Assignment
Solve the following problems. Write the hidden question frst.
1. Mother buys 4 bars of soap at P 24 each and 3 kilos of sugar at P 27 each. How
much change did she get from P 500?
2. A farmer harvested 3 baskets of tomatoes with 500 pieces in each basket. If he
will give this equally to his fve children, how many pieces of tomatoes will each
child receive?

Handout 2
Present and discuss this problem to the class.
Mother went to the market. She Bought 2 kilos of fsh at P 85 per kilo, 5 kilos of price
at P 21.50 per kilo and 6 pieces of oranges at P 4.50 each.
How much money was left, if she had P 500 bill in her wallet?
Let us analyze the problem.
Given:
2 kilos of fsh at P 85 per kilo
5 kilos of rice at P 21.50 per kilo
6 pieces of oranges at P 4.50 each
P 500 - Mothers money
Asked:
How much money was left if she had P 500 bill in her wallet?
Hidden Question:
How much did mother pay for the fsh? rice? oranges? How much did she pay in all?
Processes:
multiplication, addition and subtraction
Equation:
P 500 - (2 X P 85) + ( 5 X P 21.50) + (6 X P 4.50) = N
Solution:
Step A Step B

P 85.00 P 170.00
X 2 + 107.50
P 170.00 - amount paid for the fsh 27.00
P 304.50 - total amt. paid in the market
P 21.50
x 5 Step C
P 107.50 - amount paid for the rice
P 500.00 - Mothers money
P 4.50 304.50 - total amt. paid for the food bought
x 6 P 195.50 - amount left in mothers wallet
P 27.00 - amount paid for the oranges
