The pur se net i s onl y shot when a school of f i sh i s
f ound. I n Sumat r a t he ski pper r el i es on seei ng a
" boi l " of f i sh on t he sur f ace, or seabi r ds di vi ng t o
t ake f i sh. Ther e i s a vast ar r ay of f i sh f i ndi ng
equi pment avai l abl e t o a pur se sei ner f or mor e
accur at e l ocat i on of a school , whi ch i s not needed on
ot her t ypes of f i shi ng boat s. The most i mpor t ant of
t hese i s t he SONAR. Most l ar ge pur se sei ner s wi l l have
2 or 3 t ypes of sonar soundi ng at one t i me. The r eason
f or t hi s i s t he di f f er ent t ypes of f i sh t o be caught .

4net is shot the skipper should try to keep
the mark between 70 and 90 degrees on the starboard
side but care must be taken not to alter too quickly as this
would result in too small a circle being made and some
net still remaining onboard when coming back to the
dhan buoy.

This is how the mark will appear when shooting is
complete and the vessel is coming back to the dhan
buoy. The net will also be seen on the sonar and the
skipper will be able to tell whether he has been able to
stop the school from escaping.

winch pulls the purse wire in, closing the bottom of the net.
3. 2 Pur se Sei ne Construction
a) Time and Location and Labour
Const r uct i on of SFDP f i shi ng gear was by P. T. Mal uku
Mi ni Mur ni st af f on 12t h August 1985. Fi r st est i mat e of
const r uct i on t i me was t hr ee weeks, but i t t ook unt i l
10t h Oct ober 1985. Some mat er i al i ncl udi ng suppl y of
r ope S t wi st ( 10 mm) was di f f i cul t t o f i nd, and so 7 mm
S t wi st was subst i t ut ed.
I t t ook 36 days t o make t he net :
12 - 31 August , 1985 : 16 days
2 - 9 Sept ember , 1985 : 7 days
12 - 30 Sept ember , 1985 : 4 days
