NextTuesdayandWednesdayprovidesyouwithanopportunityto
meetwithyourchildsclassroomteacher.Thepurposeisto
explicitlydiscussthelearningwhichhastakenplacethusfarand
setsomegoalsforthefuture.Crically,partofthegoalseng
processwillalsoinvolvearculangsomestepsinordertoachieve
thesegoals.
ForthosestudentsinPreschool,KindergartenandGrade1,the
conferencewilltaketheformofameengbetweenparentsand
teacher.
ForthosestudentsinGrades2,3and4,itwillbeathreeway
conference,withthestudent,parentsandteacherallaending.It
isourbeliefthatitisdevelopmentallyappropriateforourstudents
toaendtheseconferencesandbeinvolvedintheconversaons
abouttheirlearning.Theteacherwillconnuetoleadthe
conversaoninthissituaon,givingfeedbackonyourchilds
learningatthispointinme,andprovidinginformaononthenext
stepsandgoals.
Whydowedothis?
Parentteacherconferenceshavebeenapartofschoolculturefora
longperiodofme.Doweconnuetodothisonthebasisof
tradion,ordowebelievethatthisexperienceaddsvaluetowhat
istakingplace?Theansweristhelaer,mostdenitely.Our
raonaleistoprovidesomefacetofacefeedbackonthelearning
takingplace.Theconversaonispurposefulinthatitconnuesto
supportyouinbuildingarelaonshipoftrustwithyourchildsclass
teacher(s).
Parentsshouldbeeducatedinthelanguageofschooling,sothat
homeandschoolcanshareintheexpectaons,andthechilddoes
nothavetoliveintwoworldswithlileunderstandingbetween
thehomeandschool.JohnHae,(2009).VisibleLearning:aSynthesis
ofOver800MetaAnalysesRelatedtoStudentAchievement.
Thisconferenceformspartofaseriesoffeedbackopportunies
whichoccuroverthecourseoftheyear,asoutlinedbelow.Our

OnFriday24thOctober,thelastdayofthequarterpriortothebreak,wewillbecelebrangFilipiniana.Thisprovides
studentsfromElementary,MiddleandHighSchoolwithanopportunitytocelebrateandlearnmoreaboutPhilippine
culturetogetherasaninternaonalcommunity.WewillbeginthedaywithawholeElementarySchoolassembly
starngat8:00amintheFineArtsTheatre.Thiswillbefollowedbyeachgradeleveltakingpartinaseriesofacvies,
withafocusonexperiencingdieringaspectsofFilipinoculture.Filipinianaisadayforourenrecommunitytocome
together,withourparentsinvitedtojoininthefun.

Sick Day Guidelines
IsYourChildTooSickForSchool?

Ourgoalasaschoolclinicistopromoteandsupportthehealthofthestudentssothatthey
mayfullyparcipateintheirclassesandallacviesoered.Weunderstandthatgood
aendanceinschoolisimportantforachildssuccess;however,theremaybeoccasions
whenparentsareundecidedwhethertheirchildisttoaendschool.

Generally,ifachildistoosicktobecomfortableatschoolortoparcipateinclassroom
acviesoriftheymayspreadacontagiousdiseasetootherchildren,theyshouldremain
athome.Thefollowingguidelinescannotcovereveryeventualitybutmayhelpyoudecide
whetheryourchildshouldstayathomeorcometoschool.

Studentshouldremainathomeif:
Theyhaveafeverof37.8C(99.8F)orabove(pleasetaketemperaturebeforemedicaonisgiven)
Theyarevoming
Theyhavediarrhea
Theysuerfromfrequentorpersistentcoughing
Theyhavepersistentpain(ear,stomach,head,etc.)
Theyhaveawidespreadrash
Theyhaveapinkeye(conjuncvis)

CoughAstudentwhohasapersistent,hackingcoughwillndithardtoconcentrateandmaycausesignicantdisruponinclass
andshouldbekeptathome.Ifthecoughissuchthatitinterfereswiththestudentsabilitytotalkorfunconnormally,they
shouldstayathome.Amild,infrequent,coughisnotgenerallytoodebilitangandisquitecommonbutifyourchilddevelopsa
coughthatismoreseverethanyouwouldreasonablyexpectwiththecommoncold,youshouldconsidertakingthemtotheirdoc
tor,parcularlyifthisisassociatedwithfever,abnormalbehavior,dicultyinbreathingorwheezing.
DiarrheaandvomingStudentssueringfromthisshouldbekeptathomeandshouldvisittheirdoctorifsymptomsper
sist.Theyshouldbefreeofsymptomsfor24hoursandabletokeepdownfoodanddrinkbeforetheyreturntoschool.
FeverItisschoolpolicythatachildwithafeverof37.8C(99.8F)oraboveshouldnotcometoschoolandcannotremainin
school.Beforereturningtoschoolthestudentshouldbefreefromfever(withoutmedicaon)for24hours.
PinkeyeorConjuncvisThiscanbecausedbyavirus,bacteriaorallergy.Theremayberedness,swelling,itchiness,discharge
andpuness.Astudentwiththesesymptomsshouldnotcometoschoolbutshouldvisittheirdoctortoseeifanbiocdropsare
necessary.Theschoolrequestsamedicalcercateofclearancebytheirdoctorbeforereturningtoschool,asthiscondionis
extremelycontagious.
RashesandskininfeconsTheyaremostoencausedbybacteriaorviruses,whichcanbepassedtootherseasily.Thestudent
shouldconsulthis/herdoctorbeforereturningtoschoolandpresentamedicalcercateofclearance.
RunnyNoseThisisoentherstindicaonofacommoncoldvirusorareacontoallergenssuchaspollenordustandshould
notusuallybeareasontokeepachildathome.Onlyifthechildistoouncomfortabletobeabletoparcipateinnormalclass
roomacviesortocompletetheirworkshouldthisbeconsideredareasontostayhome.Theyoungerchildrenparcularlymay
ndthattheyaretoouncomfortabletocometoschoolastheirnasalpassagesaresmallerandtheynditdiculttomanagea
constantlydrippingnose.
SorethroatThestudentshouldstayathomeandconsidervisinghis/herdoctor,parcularlyifthereissignicantswellingor
painofthethroat.Ifastudentisdiagnosedwithstrepthroat,he/sheshouldnotreturntoschoolbeforetheyarefeverfreeandon
anbiocsfor2448hours.
