HUMAN BODY
Your heart is really a muscle. It's located a little to the left of the middle of your chest,
and it's about the size of your fist. There are lots of muscles all over your body - in your
arms, in your legs, in your back, even in your behind. But this muscle is special because
of what it does - the heart sends blood around your body. The blood provides your body
with the oxygen and nutrients it needs. It also
carries away the waste that your body has to get
rid of.
Your heart is sort of like a pump or two pumps in
one. The right side of your heart receives blood
from the body and pumps it to the lungs. The left
side of the heart does the exact opposite: it
receives blood from the lungs and pumps it out
to the body. By the time you're grown up, your
heart will be beating (pumping) about 70 times a
minute
How does the heart beat? Before each beat, your heart fills with blood. Then it contracts
to squirt the blood along When something contracts, it squeezes tighter - try squeezing
your hand into a fist. That's sort of like what your heart does so it can squirt out the
blood. Your heart does this all day and all night, all the time. Every day, an adult heart
pumps 2,000 gallons (7,500 liters) of recycled blood by filling and contracting. The heart
is one tough worker!

3.5 ROLE PLAY

B. Practice

the conversations below. Practice similar conversations with a

partner in your class.

Conversation A
Patient

Hi. Can I speak with the pharmacist?

Pnermeast

I am the pharmacist on duty today. What can I help you with?

Patient

When I woke up yesterday, I noticed that my arm was a reddish-brown

color and was swollen. It is painful and itchy. It seems to be getting worse
today. Is there a cream that I can buy that will reduce the swelling and
relieve the itchiness?

Ph arma cist

Let's take a look at the armo You're right. It is a brown color and it is
swollen. Let me ask you a couple of questions. Were you bitten by an
insect or did you hit your arm?
Not that I remember But I was camping during the Labor Day weekend 2
days ago. Maybel was bitten by an insect and did not notice it.

Patient

OK. That seems possible, as I can see a possible bite mark. Has the
swelling spread in the last 2 days?

P armacist

Yeso At first, the brown color and swelling was only around my wrist.

Pa ient

Today, they nearly reach my elbow!

Pharmacist

Have you noticed any pus?

Patient

YesoAs I was scratching my arm this morning, I noticed a small amount of

clear fluid discharge.

Ph arma cist

OK. It looks like you may have what is called impetigo, which is a mild skin
condition that can be caused by an insect bite. I really think you should
see a doctor today since the infection in your arm is pretty big and
spreading.

Patient

Really?

25
Mr. Luis CarlosGutirrez Valenzuela

Pharmacist

It looks like you're going to need a prescription for an antibiotic. But in the
meantime, you may take Benadryl for the itching so you don't continue to
scratch and spread the infection.

Patient

Benadryl? I've never taken Benadryl.

Pharmacist

You need to be careful. Benadryl can make you drowsy, so don't drive or
operate heavy machinery right after you take it. To relieve the pain, I
recommend you take Tylenol or Motrin unless you have any kidney or liver
problems.

Patient

Actually, I take Tylenol a lot when I have a headache and I don't have any
kidney problems.

Pharmacist

Good. You can find both Benadryl and Tylenol in aisle 4. And I know lt's
hard not to, but try not to scratch. The infection can spread and make
things worse.

Patient

Thanks for all your help. I will call my doctor as soon as I get home. Thank
you for your help.

Pharmacist

Sure, glad to be of help.

Conversation B
Petient

Hi, can I speak with the pharmacist?

Phsrmecis:

Hi, I am Mrs. Smith, the pharmacist on duty. What can I help you with
today?

Patient

My feet are burning and itching, and the skin is peeling off. I'm starting to
tear my hair out! How can I make the burning and itching stop?

Pharmacist

Do you mind if I examine your feet?

Patient

Not at all.

Pharmacist

OK, you said that both feet are burning and itching?

Patient

Ves!

Ph arma cist

OK, I am going to remove your socks and shoes. Let's take a look at your
feet.

Patient

Do I have athlete's foot?

26

Mr. Luis Carlos Gutirrez Valenzuela

Pharmacist

Ves, the skin is scaly between your toes and on the soles of your feet.
This scaliness, in combination with the buming and itching, is
characteristic of a fungal infection called athlete's foot.

Patient

What should Ido?

Ph arma cist

I recommend that you apply Lamisil cream twice a day to the affected
area. You will use this cream for 2 weeks.

Patient

Can I stop using it if the buming sensation and itchiness go away?

Pharmacist

It is important that you continue to use the cream for the entire 2weeks,
even if the buming and itching stop before then. If you don't use the cream
for 2 weeks, the infection may return. Do you have any questions?

Patient

Do I need to do anything to my feet before I put the cream on?

Pharmacist

You should wash and completely dry your feet, even between the toes,
before applying the cream. In addition, you should change your socks
daily and should consider wearing different shoes, as the fungus may
possibly be living in your shoes if they are old or if they are constantly
worn.

Patient

Where can I find the Lamisil?

Pharmacist

Follow me. 1'11

FEELING STRESSED?
Everyone feels stress, and a little stress is OK. It was gives you energy and pushes you
to do well at school or work. But too much stress is not good. There are ways to
manage stress Try one or more of these tips the next time you feel stressed out.

1.
Take a deep breath. Breathe slowly and deeply every time you begin to feel
stress. Make this a habit, and you can often stop a little stress from becoming a
lot of stress.

2.
Make a "to do" list, and decide what you need to do right away and what can
easily wait. Clean up your study or work space. Do the same with your computer
desktop.

3.
Go for a swim. Run. Ride your
bicycle. Do aerobics. Hike up a
mountain. It doesn't really matter
what you do Just do something
that you enjoyo

4.
Have a problem? Oon't keep it
inside Talk to friend, a family
member, or even your cat. Oon't
want to talk? Write it down in a stress journal.

5.
See a funny movie. Tell sorne jokes. Watch sorne silly pet videos on the Internet.
Laughter - yours or someone else's - is often the best medicine.

6.
That's right . nothing! Close the door. No TV, computer, or phone. Sit down and
take a break from life. Close your eyes and feel the stress... disappear.

Hi, I need help. I woke up this moming with my right eye crusted and shut
tight. I washed my face, and the eye was red. And it's gotten worse
throughout the day. Now it's itchy, swollen, and really red.
P ermecist It looks like you have conjunctivitis, or what we call pink eye.
Pa 'en:
I don't think I've ever had pink eye. I've had a stye, but not pink eye.
Pharmacist Pink eye is very contagious. That's probably how you got it. Do your eyes
also feel itchy?
Patient
Yeah, it feels like there is something in my eye, but I can't get it out.
Anyway, I have a prescription to treat it. I have a big presentation in 2
days and I don't want to look like this. Here's the prescription.
Pharmacist OK. It's a prescription for tobramycin ophthalmic solution. They're
eyedrops. Do you wear contacts?
Patient
Yeah, but I didn't put them in this moming. As you can see, I'm wearing
my glasses.
Pharmacist Good. Don't wear your contacts while using eyedrops and until your eye
clears up.
Patient
That's it. Will it clear up in 2 days?

Your doctor has prescribed that you use the eyedrops for 5 days. Put one
drop in your eye every 4 hours. It should relieve the redness,
inflammation, and itchiness. And even if you see that your eye has cleared
up before the 5 days, continue using the drops.
OK. 1just hope my eye gets better before my presentation.
1 hope so too. And don't be surprised if you experience a buming or
stinging sensation.
These are just some of the side effects. Make sure you read the
instructions carefully. And good luck with your presentation.
Thanks.

Hi. Could you fill this prescription quickly? We just got back from the
pediatrician'soffice and my daughter has an ear infection. She's
been crying non-stop. Here's the prescription.
The prescription is for amoxicillin, an antibiotic. Has she had

No. 1don't think so. This is her first ear infection.
How old is she?
She's almost 3...34 months old.
Is she allergic to penicillin?
No. 1don't think so.
OK. The doctor has ordered the amoxicillin in suspension form, liquid
formo I suggest that you also buy adose measuring spoon if you
don't have one so that you can measure the dosage as precisely as
possible.
1have one
Good.
How about the side effects? Is there anything 1should look for?
Yeso Keep your eyes open for any side effects such as watery
diarrhea. And if she gets a rash or starts itching or wheezing, call
your doctor immediately.
Can she eat with the medicine?
Sure. And make sure she drinks plenty of water when you give her,
her dosage.
OK. 1'11

E. Side

Effects

a. Many medicines have side effects Side effects are new problems that medicine
can cause. This can happen even when the medicine is working correctly. For
example, you may take an antibiotic to cure an infection. This medicine may
cause nausea even though it is doing a good job of curing the infection.
b. It is important to know what side effects a medicine might cause before you start
taking lt When your doctor gives you a prescription for new medicine, ask what
side effects you might have.
c. Over-the-counter (OTC) medicine can have side effects, too. When you buy OTC
medicine, read the label carefully. If you have any questions ask the pharmacist.
d. Side effects usually begin soon after you start a new medicine. Side effects might
decrease or stop after 4 to 6 weeks.
e. Two people taking the same medicine can have different experiences.
Womenmayhavedifferentsideeffectsthanmen.
f. Some people have no side effects at all. Some have side effects that are minor
or manageable. A fewpeoplehaveserioussideeffects.
