Educational and sports campus for children

I.

Introduction

In the next few minutes I would like to present my diploma project, what is it about, who can benefit from
this project, why is it important, which are its goals and how is it organized in order to well-function.

A. what is this project about

This project presents a solution for an educational and sports campus for children in Rucr- Bran mountain
area, near Piatra Craiului National Park, Romania.

B. the definition of the terms

An educational and sports campus can be defined as a place where children can come during their
holidays or any time of the year and they will be supervised by instructors, teachers and can be well taken
care by medical personal. Here, in this particular place, are also welcomed disabled children and they will
never feel abused or isolated. The activities are varied and they combine sports like swimming, basketball,
voleyball, handball with educational and cultural activities, the campus consisting also in a school and a
kindergarden, which can function all year long.

C. who are the beneficiaries for this project, who are the investors for this project
The beneficiaries for this project are the children, supported by the local comunity and the local authorities.
This campus is welcoming children from all over the country, being situated in the center of Romania, in a
beautiful place near the mountains and in an accessibe area.

II.

What is the importance and which are the goals of this project
A. the importance of this project, the necessity of this project

Romania is a developing country which has a lot of gaps, especially in the social area. There are too few
places where disabled children can interract with normal children and this fact leads to isolation and never
integrating in a functional society. This is why I belive that this project is a necessity. Also I believe that this
campus is very important not only for disabled children, but also for children all over the country who don't
have a place where they can go and socialize actively with other children while the old camps are not being
functional anymore.

B. the goals of this project

This project aims to become an active and delightful place for children of different ages, from kindergarden
to primary school.
The location of the site is in Dmbovicioara Village, Arge County, at 180 kilometers distance from
Bucharest and 30 from Braov, with access from 73rd National Road, called Rucr-Bran Couloir. This area

was chosen for its potential development of the large rural territory which offers an astonishing view and a
friendly climate for a children campus. The altitude of this site is 1300m.

III.

Describing the project

A. the functionality of this project

The total area of the site is 38.000 sqm.

The spatial volumetric structure is a pavilionar type around some open yards, but composed as an unit
well-integrated in the landscape, with functions and activities for temporary living- accommodation,
education- kindergarten and primary school, sports- indoor pool and sports hall, and administration. The
sports area was conceived with separated acces for tourists and local people, so that it could be useful for
a larger territory and for lots of people around.
There are 76 parking slots for cars, 6 parking slots for buses. It can accommodate 102 children and the
same in kindergarden and primary school. For medical personal, teachers and instructors there are 14
slots.

B. the structure, the space organisation

The pavilionar disposal follows the sites slope running from south to north towards Piatra Craiului
Mountains as a visual limit, in order to conceive an artificial environment adapted to the natural one which
overlooks the site. There are seven buildings conceived as a complex and disposed in relation to
topography as a planimetrical scheme following the sites shape The resulted spaces among buildings are
easy accessible like green areas, play grounds, outdoor activities and recreation.
The planimetrical scheme starts with administration building and finishes with the educational one,
developing the accommodation buildings between them. The connections among building units are made
on ground floor, even if there are floor differences. In this manner, the second floor of each building meets
the ground floor of the the next one, the connections are made by stairs, ramps and elevators.
Each building is organised following certain criteria. Hereby, accommodation, administration and
educational buildings have a taller and different flank streetside, by contrast with backside ones. This
generates a compositional uniformity.
Detaling the accommodation flag, it is obvious that the rezidential cell- a 5 beds room and 1 supervisor
room, each room with its own bathroom or 2 beds rooms- has a well-determined rule system. Therefore,
the cells of each floor have a joint space for mixed activities, for socialization, surrounded by a
wintergarden, which makes the connection with the outside zone. The capacity of one accommodation
building is 8 cells- 36 beds and they use the glazed flag for dinning, cooking and an open space volume
depending on weather for joint activities.

C. the materials & textures used

As for the materials and textures used, Wood is the winner, a local material of all near-thesite buildings
and even of all Rucr-Bran mountain area. Thereby, the whole campus has a visual compositional identity
integrating in mountain rural landscape. The streetside flanks of accommodation buildings are heavily
glazed, reaviling the stunning dominant landscape- Piatra Craiului Mountains. The same solution is used in
sports buildings - indoor pool and sports hall.

IV.

Conclusions
A. How this project solves the existing problems

This campus succeds in gathering various activities spaces which can reply children needs, being
conceived for all kinds of kids including disabled ones who can this way integrate easier into a community
and they can get beyond their disabilities.

B. this project is functional and well organised

As a conclusion, I can say that this project meets the local needs in the social area. It combines sports
activities, educational and cultural ones in a well organised campus, where children are welcomed no
matter of their accessibility problems. This project is important and neccessary, is functional and well
organised and it integrates well in the chosen area.
