Assignment 10 microstrip patch antennas

Antennas and Propagation, Frhjahrssemester 2011

Problem 10.1 :
An antenna for a satellite communication system operating in L-band (1.6 GHz) should be
designed. The antenna should be mounted on the roof of the car for the satellite cellular
phone. Two possible types of antennas are proposed: a rectangular microstrip patch and a
rectangular aperture antenna. The patch antenna should be designed on a substrate with the
dielectric constant of r = 2.2 and height of h = 0.1575 cm. The aperture antenna is assumed
to have TE10 mode field distribution and width-to-height ratio a / b = 2.

Determine the dimensions of the rectangular patch.

Determine the resonant input impedance of the patch assuming no mutual coupling
between the two radiating slots.
If the microstrip feed of the patch antenna has width w0 = 0.2526 cm, find the position
of the feed (L1) so that the antenna is matched.
Using the graph in the figure above, determine the directivity of the patch antenna.
Determine the dimensions of the rectangular aperture with the same directivity.
Which antenna would you choose for the system and why?

Problem 10.2 :
A rectangular patch antenna is fed by a microstrip line of width w0 = 0.7 cm. Both, the
antenna and the feed are built on a substrate with the dielectric constant of r = 2.25. The
frequency of operation is 2 GHz, and substrate height is h = 0.6 cm.

Using the graph given above (on the right-hand side), design the rectangular patch
(determine W and L), so that the antenna has directivity of 7.0 dBi.
Calculate the resonant input impedance of the patch assuming no mutual coupling
between the two radiating slots. Assume that W<<0 condition for the approximation
formula is satisfied.
Calculate the characteristic impedance of the feeding microstrip line.
Find the length of the feed inset (L1) so that the antenna is matched.
Consider the coordinate system shown in the figure above on the left-hand side (the
x-axis is normal to the patch and positioned in its geometrical center, the y-axis is
parallel to the microstrip feed). How would you position a dipole with the center on the
x-axis in the far field for maximum reception

Problem 10.3 :
An antenna array consisting of four rectangular patch antennas is to be designed for a
frequency of 1.6 GHz. Patches and feed lines are built on a substrate with r = 2.25 and
h = 0.6 cm. It is assumed that the feed network has perfect impedance match at each
discontinuity.

Determine the dimensions of the rectangular patch (L,W).

The array is matched to a 50 feedline. Find the widths (w1, w2) of the respective parts
of the feeder tree. Suppose that the T-junction is simply modeled as three transmission
lines connected in one point. Use the curve showing impedance as a function of line
width.
Determine feed location L1 for matched conditions.
The distance between the antenna elements is d = 10 cm. Find the phase difference
between the currents feeding the respective antenna elements.
Find the array factor.
