1. OBJECTIVE
To establish a procedure for determination of the particle size
distribution of aggregates by dry sieving after wet sieving based
on BS 1377 : Part 2 : 1990 : 9.
2. SCOPE
This test method applies to semi-solid bituminous materials.
The wet sieving method covers the quantitative determination of
the particle size distribution for cohensionless soil to fine sand
size. The combined silt and clay fraction can be obtained by
difference.
The procedure given involves preparation of the sample by wet
sieving to remove silt and clay sized particle, followed by dry
sieving of the remaining coarser material.

7. TEST INSTRUCTION
7.1.
Clean the penetration needle with mathelyne chloride
and dry it with a clean cloth.
7.2.
Insert the needle carefully into the penetrometer.
7.3.
Place the sample container directly on the submerged
stand in the penetrometer. Keep the sample container
completely covered with water at the 25C temperature.
7.4.
Using the level indicator, ensure that the apparatus is
level.
7.5.
Bring the pointer of penetrometer to zero.
7.6.
Position the needle by slowly lowering it until its tip
just makes contact with the surface of the sample (This
is accomplished by bringing the actual needle tip into
contact with its image reflected on the surface of the
sample from a properly placed source of light).
7.7.
Release the needle holder and press the dial of the
gauge to measure the distance penetrated in the 1/10mm
reading after 5s. If the container moves, discard the
result.
7.8.
Make at least three determinations at points on the
surface of the sample not less than 10mm from the side
of the container and not less than 10mm apart and
record the readings in form (PL)F-WI-01.
