Assignment 07 Fire Main System

The document discusses the fire main system onboard ships. The system has two independently powered pumps that supply hydrants and the deck main through an isolating valve. This is to prevent loss of water through damaged pipework in the engine room and maintain the deck supply. The isolating valve allows isolation of damaged parts of the fire main so the rest remains usable. Ships must have a minimum of two fire pumps that are independently driven. An emergency fire pump is also required and must be located outside the machinery space. Fire mains and hoses have minimum capacity and length requirements. Nozzles must be dual purpose type incorporating a shutoff. An international shore connection is also required to be kept in the fire control station.

Fire Main System Onboard the Ship

Water is the chief fire fighting medium on a ship and the fire main is
the basic installation for fighting fires. The system shown below has two
independently powered pumps which are also used for general service
and ballast. These pumps supply two engine room hydrants and the
deck main through the isolating valve.
The later is required to prevent loss of water through damaged pipe
work in the engine room if, to maintain the deck supply, the emergency
fire pumps has to be used. The deck main has a drain at the lowest
position so that the pipe can be emptied (particularly of freshwater) in
cold weather. If this is not done, the pipe can be damaged by water
freezing, but more important he pipe will be blocked by the ice and not
stable.
What is the purpose of isolating valve in fire line on ship?
A valve will be fitted so that if part of the fire main is damaged it can
be isolated from the supply. That way the rest of the main is still usable
and can be used for fire fighting.
