An Informational Report Regarding Employment in Nursing at the Salem Hospital

The Salem Hospital is a non-profit hospital and is one of the largest hospitals in Oregon.
It has a very busy emergency department as well as a Family Birth Center. It is also
Salem’s largest private employer.

Organization Management
The Salem Hospital has department managers that review the applications of nurses
seeking employment. All hospital staff are highly scrutinized during their hiring process
and must be licensed with proper training and experience.

History
The first Salem Hospital was organized by local physicians and private citizens. It first
opened its doors on January 1, 1896. The second hospital was founded in 1916 by
members of a church. It was then turned over to the Salem community in 1947 and
became a not-for-profit corporation, formed under the name of Salem Memorial Hospital.
In 1969, the two hospitals merged together and was remodeled and expanded in 1989.

Job Description

Job Title: Registered Nurse (RN)

Duties:
* Monitor, record, and report symptoms and changes in patient’s conditions
* Record patients’ medical information and vitals signs
* Prepare patients for, and assist with, examinations and treatments
* Administer treatment and medications
* Teach patients how to manage their illness or injuries

Daily Schedule: A nurse’s work schedule can vary, due to the fact that most facilities
require 24-hour care. They may work nights, weekends, and holidays.

Travel: The times when a nurse would have to travel depend on if he or she is a home
healthcare nurse or ambulatory nurse. To work at the Salem hospital, there is no travel
required as a hospital nurse.

Requirements/Qualifications: A registered nurse typically is required to have a bachelor’s


of science degree in nursing (BSN), and associate degree in nursing (ADN), and a
diploma. They must also pass a national licensing examination in order to obtain a
nursing license. Nurses should be caring, sympathetic, responsible, and detail oriented.
Pay and Benefits: The salary of a registered nurse on average is $60,000 a year and
benefits generally include vacation and sick time, medical, vision, and dental coverage,
and social security.
