Does the power generated equal the power dissipated? (P = Pgen + Pdis = 0?)

yes

B. Modeling - Kirchoffs Laws.

1. Model the circuit from Part A in Pspice. Turn on bias display for V and I (see Lab Lecture notes) and run the
simulation. This is the same type of Bias simulation that you ran for Lab 02.
2. Record the simulated values for

Do these values agree reasonably well with the values calculated in step 1?

C. Measurements - Kirchoffs Laws.

1. Construct the circuit on the ANDY board. Use correct color coding for wires, good wiring practice, and proper
meter lead connections. The 9VDC supply is on the ANDY board.
2. Use your multimeter to measure VR1 , VR2 , IR1 , IR2 and IR3. Use the correct range on the DMM for each
measurement. Follow the techniques developed in Experiment 01 for measuring the current in a branch of the
circuit. Use the passive sign convention that a voltage rise is positive and that a current leaving a node is
positive.
Use caution when measuring current! Make sure your meter leads do are not in the current shunt
when you measure voltage!

How do these measured values compare to the calculated and simulated val ues?
They are exact in almost every case.

5. Use the measured values to compute V = V1 + VR1 + VR2.

V = _____-9___________ + _______6.43________ + _______2.52________ = ______-.05______
ECE 2074 Lab 03 Page 2 of 6

Is KVL Satisfied (within reason) by the measurements?

yes

6. Use the measured values to compute the current leaving node A, I = IR1 + IR2 + IR3 = 0 at node A.
(Note: IR1 is negative as defined by the passive sign convention because it is entering node A .)
I = _____-794___________ + _____540__________ + _______253________ = _______-1mA____
Is KVL Satisfied (within reason) by the measurements?

Yes

7. Use the measured values of the node voltages and branch currents to calculate the power dissipated in R1, R2,
and R3. Calculate the power generated by the voltage source.

Are all dissipated powers positive?

yes

Should all dissipated powers be positive?

yes

For passive sign convention, is the power generated by the voltage source
negative?

yes

The power check requires that P = Pgen + Pdis = 0. Is the power check satisfied?

yes

D. Pspice DC Sweep model with a potentiometer for R1

1.

Replace R1 with R_var in Pspice, and set up R_var and Parameter (see the Lab Lecture notes).

2.

Set up and run the DC Sweep simulation as R_var changes (see the Lab Lecture notes)

3.

Place probes to measure VR1 and VR2. Use the cursor to measure VR2 for various values of R1.

How does the VR2 simulation measurement at R_var = 8.2k compare to the Part A calculation and Part
B simulation value with R1 = 8.2k? They are almost exact.

4.

Add a text that says "your name, ECE2074 - Lab 03" to the schematic below your circuit.

5.

Save your schematic and upload the .sch file to scholar as part of the assignment. When you validate, you will
need to load this file and run the simulation for the GTA.

E. Circuit Measurements with a potentiometer for R1

1. Replace R1 with a 10k trim pot from your parts kit (see the Lab Lecture). Connect the trim pot by wiring pin 1
to node D and pin 2 to node A. Do not wire anything to the trim pot's pin 3.

2. Use the meter to measure VR2 as you slowly rotate the trim pot fully counterclockwise (CCW), and (CW).
What happened to VR2 and the resistance of R1 as the knob rotated CW? CCW

3. Using the measurement of VR2, adjust the Trim pot so that its resistance value 8.2k. Remove the trimpot and
measure the value of R1. Replace the trimpot and leave it set for validation.
your set VR2 = ______2.51________, your measured R1 = ______8.17_________

After you have completed the Lab procedure,

1. Make sure that you have completed Quiz 03.
ECE 2074 Lab 03 Page 4 of 6

The questions cover the Lab Notes and Procedure.

2. Submit this worksheet and your Pspice schematic (.sch) file to scholar.
Make sure that scholar receives your submissions before the deadline, and that you save the submission
confirmations until you are sure that your submissions were received.
3. Take your computer, meter, Probe leads, and ANDY board with the circuit wired (on the breadboard and in
Pspice to the OpEL) and Validate your Lab before the due date and time.
10 points will be deducted for each item (component, probe lead, power supply, etc.) that you must
borrow from the GTA to validate.

ECE 2074 Lab 03 Validation Procedure Fall 2013

for R1 = 8.2k.
VR2 =____________________
2. (25 points) The GTA will check your measurements for VR2 with the trim pot set for a value of 8.2k. Then
carefully (without turning the knob) remove the trim pot and measure the resistance between pins 1 and 2.
VR2 =_______________, Trim pot resistance = _______________,
How do VR2 and the trimpot resistance compare to the ideal values? __________________________________
3. (25 points) What can you say about the power dissipated in the resistors vs. the power generated by the source?
