General Information
A Solar Module produces electricity when exposed to the Sun,
then it charges a battery and releases to a load when required.
There
are
electronics

Prevents Over charging of the

Prevents Low discharging of the
Battery
Automatic Switch ON & OFF of
the Load ( in this case it is the
Lamp)

Four different types of Solar Street Lighting Systems are available , namely,

1. SPECIFICATIONS OF SYSTEM COMPONENTS

1.1. SOLAR MODULE
This is a very important source for power generation and
the solar modules supplied by SOLKAR are made by
under
strict
quality
standards
and
specifications.
We supply only SINGLE/MULTI CRYSTALLAINE silicon

cells based modules which have long life of 25 years and
our modules are available only with above 15% efficiency
solar cells. This assures a greater power generation at
less space needs and longer life cycles.
1.2 BATTERY
Many a times , a solar street light fails because of
improper selection of battery type and specifications. As
you are aware , power is generated only in day time but
load is used only in night time. Therefore , battery is a
crucial component of the solar street lighting system.
After considerable experience from field and trying of
different battery spec and makes , we have zeroed in on
LEAD ACID , TUBULAR , LOW MAINTAINENCE , C 10
RATED BATTERY ( INSTEAD OF C 20 ) to make sure the
battery has longer life cycles and charges faster and
discharges longer.
1.3 LIGHTING DOME

The most important aspect to choose on these is the light fitting.
Primarily the source of light can be as below

Sodium Vapour
It is very important to have low power consumption, high
brightness light source. We manufacture only LED type Solar
Street Lighting system.
Quality of LED used is very very important to ensure proper
brightness, lower power consumption and longer life. There are
plenty of unbranded Chinese LED available in the market which
costs almost one fifth of a branded product. We use only OSRAM
/ PHILIPS LED in our product. The casing is also very important
because it should be water proof , Heat proof and easy to clean
and having high transparency .
1.4. CHARGE CONTROLLER AND ELECTRONICS

SOLKAR manufacturing CHARGE CONTROLLER for
different applications since 1992. These are made with
latest designs , components and easy to service and
replace with highest reliability.

2. STAND ALONE SOLAR STREET LIGHTING SYSTEM

Basically Stand alone systems are installed in the field. There is a
pole which has Solar Module on the top, a Dome with light fitting, a
Battery box with electronics and Battery in it. These products are
commonly seen in decentralised light applications such as Road
lights and Lighting at un-electrified locations etc.,
In stand alone street lights all the components of the street lights
such
as
SOLAR
MODULE
BATTERY
BOX
CHARGE
CONTROLLER, LIGHT DOME are fixed in a single pole itself.

The battery is Charged only by SOLAR MODULE.
There is no connection of EB power to this pole. The poles are installed
at site and civil works foundations are required to ensure their rigidity.
We have Stand alone system in 2 models, which is with 6W LED Dome
and 12W LED Dome.
The specification of Solar Module and Battery depends upon the
Wattage of light dome and number of hours of illumination required
every day.

The solar Modules are warranted for 10 years , Lamp Dome 1 year ,
Battery 3 years , Electronics and charge controller 3 years
The Main Concerns of the

Stand Alone Solar Street Lighting system are
i. Cleaning of the Solar Modules needs careful attention as it is
mounted on a single pole at a height of 12/15 feet and must be
done every month as it is mounted in the field and dust
accumulations can be fast.
ii. Battery is charged only by Solar Module and therefore during
rainy season this product will not work beyond 1 day of
Autonomy and the light must be manually switched OFF during
rainy season. If not the battery will be dead immediately
iii. If the above 2 procedures are not done , then the life of the
battery is not more than one rainy season
iv. Even small level of dust on the Solar Module affects the
performance.
v. Being a fixed model in future shadow may fall on the Solar
Module if any adjacent tree grows or building comes up.
vi. These are fixed products which cannot be shifted or modified.
3. CENTRALISED SOLAR STREET LIGHTING SYSTEM

This is a very unique product which is suitable when you have number
of lights one after another, for eg; Road lights, Compound wall lights,
Roof top lights, etc. And when you need brighter lights , taller pole
heights and easy maintenance and future upgrades are required.
We have successfully innovated and developed this product in a
manner addressing all the drawbacks of Stand Alone Street Lighting
system which are as follows
Cleaning of the Solar Module is easy as it is located in one
location.
Battery is charged both by Solar and in rainy days by normal
EB supply thereby ensuring 365 days working and better
Battery life .
We have combined energy conservation by making all the
Street Lights burn in full brightness between 6.00 pm to
10.00 pm and only alternate lights works from 10.00 pm to
6.00 am. It is also possible to make all the lights work with
full brightness from 6.00 pm to 10.00 pm and 1/3 brightness
from 10.00 pm to 6.00 am .
It is possible to have display banners on each street light
poles as shown in the picture and have them convey message
or sponsorship of corporate companies.
The systems are supplied with complete solar system with
battery back up , inverter , Poles with light domes , wiring of
the each pole with the main inverter , Trenching and closing,
Training and back up service .
We manufacture these Centralised system with a 24W LED dome. We
have package of 25 lights, 50 lights & 100 lights.

4. PORTABLE SOLAR STREET LIGHTING SYSTEM

These are first of its kind in India which enables the user to have
portable solar street lights which can empower at any location either
outdoor or indoor or roof top.
The Advantages of this product is as below
Light weight and it is ON wheels and can be positioned at any
usage point
The height can be adjusted as required
The number of lamp fitting can be additional if more
brightness required. For example you can have one or two
Domes on the same pole.
Dual Charging facility by both Solar and EB
Ideally suitable for Road construction projects, Builders,
Municipalities, Colleges, Schools, Factories,
Flat/Apartments, etc.,
Easy to maintain the Solar Module, as it is within reachable
height.
Great advantage is cleaning of the module/ top up of the
battery are very easy in this model.

5. RETRO FIT MODEL - SOLAR STREET LIGHTING SYSTEM
In this model , we retro fit to an existing street lighting pole solar lights . They are
equivalent to stand alone models or Central lighting system models as described
above.
You can select the model from the Stand alone or Central system and have them fitted
on to your existing poles. This will save additional cost of pole , civil work ,
transport and wiring for back up working .
It is possible to use this pole as in dual modes only solar during summer months and
on normal electricity with existing street light dome during winter or rainy months.
To design and offer cost , we need to know the following details
1. Layout of the existing poles and contour of present

positioning with pitch distances
2. Dimensional details of the pole , lamp load etc
3.
Preference of stand alone or centralised solar portion
WORD OF CAUTION
The biggest concern of Solar Street Lighting system is proper
selection of the lamp brightness.
Even in LED there is so
much of varieties manufactured from China, though the

specification are same, the brightness varies and life of LED
are much lower.
Select reliable Solar Module with a minimum efficiency of
16%, which will give you a life of 20 years.
Proper selection of Battery and Electronics.
Most of Battery companies including popular brands
offer 5 years warranty many time free replacement
under warranty is not given on account of poor charging
and discharging. Please note that a Simple warranty
card of 5 years does not assure the consumer free
replacement for 5 years.
Do not purchase street light just blindly only based
on cost aspect.
Be specific , analyse the design aspects of solar module
capacity , lamp shade , battery aspects.
Many supply sub standard design with improper solar
module ( keeping it very less ) , give higher rated battery
which means the product will die after few months of

working at field
