Glasgows cross country program looks bright for the future

While the Scotty boys cross
country team was hoping to bring
home a trophy, they just missed out
by taking fourth while the Scotty
girls managed a very respectable
sixth place finish.
If you should take a look at
the ages of these athletes, that was
actually a feat in itself. Glasgow loses

just three seniors: Kasey Seyfert

for the boys, Brinlie Nielsen and
Morgan Guttenberg for the girls.

Whats
more,
those
underclassmen who competed
at the State B Cross Country
Championship in Kalispell this past
Saturday are all sophomores and
freshmen not a junior on the

varsity roster meaning that there

wont be a single senior on the team
next season! (That is, unless some
runners from the Class of 2018 step
it up a notch next fall.)

In the 1830s, English schoolboys developed a

game called Hares and Hounds: Hounds would
chase hares, who would leave paper trails through
woods and hills for the hounds to follow.
The pack was the younger runners (roughly ages
13-15), who were supposedly hounds. Their job was to
follow the scent, working as a team to cover any checks
(where the scent was lost). Skilled hares would zigzag
and double, and lay false trails to make the hounds job
difficult. So when you modestly say you are a mid-pack
or back-of-the-pack runner, you are linking yourself to
those young hounds of the early 1800s.
The field was the older students (ages 16-18),
who were supposedly the pursuing huntsmen. They
followed the hounds, and once the hares were sighted,
they began the serious run in. If they caught the hares,
it was the kill. So if youre ahead of the field, you
are indeed winning the race, just as the best schoolboy
runner did as he chased the hares any misty October

A group of Londoners took up the game in 1867 as
a way to stay in shape and adopted the name Harriers.
Since then, the term has become a nickname for crosscountry runners.
Its also been popularized by the Hash House
Harriers the drinking club with a running problem.
This global network of social runners adds their own
twist beer to the old-school game.

Scotty junior quarterback Darrin Wersal has racked up

some impressive passing statistics this season including
numerous touchdown tosses he had three of those
against Malta this past Friday night and much of that
credit must go to his offensive line and a talented corps

of receivers. And yes, Darrin throws the ball beautifully.

The Scotties had an intense practice last night, ending
with more conditioning: running a trio of 200-yard sprints
(endzone to endzone and back) in preparing for their
meeting with the Colstrip Colts this Saturday.

Hunt for Humanity helps many

Once again this year hunters, landowners and

Hunt for Humanity will be teaming to donate hunter
harvested antler-less deer to the local food banks. This
program started in 2008 by First Lutheran Church in
Glasgow called Hunt for Humanity, is winding up again
in anticipation of this years hunting season.
This effort not only assists in feeding the hungry,
but also helps with the stewardship of local wildlife
populations. The reason behind this program is to
subsidize the cost of wild game processing to encourage
hunters to harvest antler-less deer in the Glasgow area
and donate them to the needy.
Since Food Banks can only accept professionally/
licensed processed meat, the program will pay a portion
of the cost for processing. Hi-Line Meats and Treasure
Trail Processing are the two participating processors in
Glasgow. Hunters are required to make a tax-deductible
donation of $45 for the processing of does and $30 for
the processing of fawns, if they choose to participate.
Since the focus is on local deer population control,
Hunt for Humanity will only accept antler-less deer.
The processed meat will then be distributed to the local
Valley Community Food Bank and other participating
entities.
The Valley County Food Bank provides food for
about 85 families each month states Nanci Schoenfelder,
a member of the Valley Community Food Bank. This
number has grown from the 45 to 75 families who were
served in 2010 when the program was last run. The
spring flood of 2011 wiped out the overabundance of
the deer population. Our budget does not allow us to
provide meat and Hunt for Humanity definitely helps us
to fill that need in our community.

contribution to the processing fund, please make
checks payable to Hunt for Humanity Fund - First
Lutheran Church and drop them off at the church
office at 641 2nd Avenue North, or call 228-4862 for

Carving Judging on Friday, October 28th at 6:00p.m.
They are now accepting pumpkins starting today.

Talk about some agonizing pain

The pastor asked if anyone in the congregation
would like to express praise for answered prayers.
Suzie Smith stood and walked to the podium. She
said, I have a praise. Two months ago, my husband,
Phil, had a terrible bicycle wreck and his scrotum was
completely crushed. The pain was excruciating and
the doctors didnt know if they could help him.
You could hear a muffled gasp from the men in
the congregation as they imagine the pain that poor
Phil must have experienced.
Phil was unable to hold me or the children,
she went on, and every move caused him terrible
pain. We prayed as the doctors performed a delicate
operation, and it turned out they were able to piece
together the crushed remnants of Phils scrotum, and
wrap wire around it to hold it in place.
Again, the men in congregation cringed and
squirmed uncomfortably as they imagined the
horrible surgery performed on Phil.
Now, she announced in a quivering voice,
thank the Lord, Phil is out of the hospital and
the doctors say that with time, his scrotum should
recover completely.
All the men sighed with unified relief. The
pastor rose and tentatively asked if anyone else had
something to say.

A man stood up and walked slowly to the podium.
He said, Hi, Im Phil. The entire congregation held
its breath.
I just want to tell my wife, the word is sternum.
Joe Biden walks in to the Oval Office and says,
Barack, I think its important to inform you that four
Brazilian soldiers were just killed in Iraq.
Thats terrible. The president replied.
Silence fell between them for a few minutes, before
the president looked up again at the vice president and
asked, Could you remind me how many a Brazilian is?

37th, is a sophomore.
Ali Cunningham, placing 44th, is a freshman.
Alaina Sallee, crossing the line in 54th, is a
sophomore.
Katie Kaiser, who was under six seconds behind
Brinlie Nielsen for a 64th place finish, is a sophomore.
Tyisha Begs His Own, who earned a trip to State as
their alternate, is a freshman.
For the Scotty boys:
Ellis McKean, who placed 11th in under 17 minutes
and earned All-State status, is a sophomore.
Ike Braaten, who just missed out on All-State with
an 18th place performance and nearly cracked 17
minutes, is just a freshman!
Merlin McKean, third highest placer for the Scotties
with 29th place, is a sophomore.
Wilson Overby, placing 42nd, is a freshman.
Colin Jamba, also contributing to the Scotty score

at State in 52nd place (total of the top five placers),

is a sophomore.
Jacob Meiers, with 90th place, is a freshman.
Colton Pewitt, earning a trip to State as their
alternate, is a sophomore.
So as you can see, Coach Karst has a wealth of talent
returning, and it will still be young teams hes working
with.
Coach K gave a list of others to watch for next
season hoping for that shot to make the trek to State.
For the boys, freshmen Kaden Zimmerman, Trevor
Johnson, John Cremer and Jaysen Turner; sophomores
Shane Sinclair and Nathanael Lippert; and junior
Tanner Overby (which would make him a lone senior
on the 2017 season). For the girls, Alexus Nistler is a
sophomore and Mattea Piersak is a freshman.
Depending how hard Scotty cross country athletes
work in the off season, we certainly wouldnt bet against
them in bringing home some trophies next year and
beyond.
