Brendens Senate Service nearing the end

As 2016 soon will be over, so

honor to have served this vast part of

ago to senate district #17 Richland
County was deleted and Chinook and
northern Blaine County and north of
Highway #2 in Havre and Hill County
to about 40 miles west of Havre were
included in my senate district #17 and

Scotty wrestlers in Sidney tonight

Following a fine performance at the CMR Holiday

Classic this past weekend Glasgow placed 7th out
of 35 teams with Matt Reyling winning at 120 pounds,
Gabe Hallock 4th at 113. Oden Hallock 4th at 132, and
Tony Kaiser 3rd at 182 the Scotties are now headed
for a dual with Sidney tonight.
Scotty Head Coach Jory Casterline says his boys are
competing just as hard as they can. At the CMR tourney,
he explained that even with some of their losses, it was
perhaps the best match a few of these individuals had
ever wrestled considering the competition.
Theyre out there fighting to the final whistle, and
thats what we need to see, he said.
The dual with Sidney will be the final action the
Scotties see until after the New Year (with the exception
of some intense practices over the holidays).
There will be a Scotty Alumni Youth Wrestling
Clinic on Wednesday, December 28th, free to all area
youth wrestlers (free pizza for them to boot) from 1:00
- 3:00. There is also 2nd Chance Sign-ups for AAU
Wrestling during this time.

The Black Monster from the Lagoon

Aside from transportation to and from aircraft

which ferry them to and from the camps, part of my
job is to entertain the clients when there is a delay in the
air service. Usually this is done by driving them around
Goose Bay and telling them some of its history, and when
that gets thin, I prompt them to tell me some entertaining
stories. Last year this was the clear prize winner: THE
BLACK MONSTER FROM THE LAGOON. One of our
clients was from the Minnesota area, if memory serves,
and in winter one of the winter sports is ice fishing on
one of the many lakes of that state.
While there are many ways of doing this, unlike in
the Arctic where I have ice fished, the Minnesotans tend
to enjoy their creature comforts while winter fishing
and build ice shacks which they tow out on the ice as
soon as the ice will beat them. Some of these shacks
are quite elaborate with TV, bunks for naps, cooking
facilities, even a bar, etc and others quite simple, enough
to protect from the weather. These shacks dot the lake
often fairly close together over favorite fishing spots. In
the middle of the shack floor a hole is cut in the ice,
usually about 3 feet square, with a chain saw and the
fishermen stand or sit around the hole jigging lures and
hoping to catch a fish.
The fella who told me this story was in one of these
shacks with son and his black Labrador dog, jigging
away when he snagged a big (10 plus pounds) fish, and
hauled it from the hole. The hook came out and the fish
was wiggling around on the floor when it got back to
the hole and it looked like it was going to escape. The
Labrador, excited by the commotion, jumped on the
fish just as it seemed it was going through the hole
and disappeared through the hole with the fish in its
jaws. The dogs owner (and his son) were distraught by
this incident as the dog was a family favorite and he
wondered what he was going to tell the family when
he came back without their pet. Just then he heard a
commotion from a nearby shack and looking out saw
three fellas bursting through the door of their shack and
high-tailing it across the ice.
It seemed that the dog, without losing the fish in its
jaws, had swam to their hole and appeared unexpectedly
through their hole. Possibly in a blur of alcohol-fueled
fright they thought that they had been attacked from
some sort of sea monster and decided to exit the pop
stand, chased by the dog and fish. The owner was happy
to get his dog back and to have a good story to tell when
visiting the more tame waters of Minipi in Labrador.

Senator Brenden continued from front

still had parts of Phillips, Valley and Roosevelt Counties
and all of Sheridan and Daniels Counties.
This new senate district stretches from the North
Dakota border to about 40 miles west of Havre. That is
285 miles of the 565 miles of the U.S.-Canadian border,
or 51% of the border with Canada! This is the largest
state senate district bordering Canada on the 49th
parallel! This senate district is the 3rd largest district in
Montana and has about fourteen thousand square miles
and is larger than nine or ten states!
Before the new Constitution was passed in the early
1970s, each county had one state senator. One can see
how eastern and rural Montana lost representation in
the Montana House, but especially in the Montana State
Senate.
I was a Presidential Elector of Montana in 2004,
2008 and 2012. Montana has 3 and there are 538 electors
in the U.S. A state has as many electors as they have
U.S. Senators and Reps. California has over 50 electors!
Our Founding Fathers had great wisdom and insight as
they sought to balance rural versus urban, giving each a
balance of power. If it were not for the Electoral College
the East and West Coast would dominate Government
and any state between would not matter. In this last
Presidential election Hillary Clinton won four of the
five Boroughs in New York City by over 2 million votes.
That is about the number of votes that gave here the
popular vote! I do not believe we want to be controlled
by the likes of California and New York!
I will miss my old and new friends in the Senate and
especially all of the great friends in my Senate District
#17, as the plus in a big district knowing more folks has
broadened my insight and knowledge and hopefully
my understanding. I will also miss standing up for our
freedom rights and fighting against those who want to
take away our property rights away, especially the left
wing environmentalists!
I want to wish my successor Senator-elect Mike
Lang from Malta well and I know he will do a great job
for our district. I also want to congratulate Speaker of
the House, Austin Knudsen and his new counterpart,
Rep.-elect Casey Knudsen. I wish Congressman Zinke
well in his new important job as Interior Secretary and
I hope the Republicans will choose his successor wisely.
I wish you all a very Merry Christmas and a Happy,
Healthy and Prosperous New Year.
Thank You

~ John Brenden
