Luna the Minnesota-
Montana Dog
By April Wamhoff
I made my bi-annual trip to
Montana in November. Man how
time flies. It went by all too fast.
Hunted some. Didn’t bring anything
home but success is not always
measured by that. (So says someone
who didn’t bring anything home,
but still...)
Had a super great time with my
dad and visiting friends. The dogs,
of course, always come, too. Luna
is a bit new to this gig, but, she’s an
Australian Shepard and a herding
dog. She may have been born in
Minnesota but Montana’s wide open
spaces and herding is in her blood.
It was a bit of a different venue
for us with the closing of the Star
Motel. I made reservations when
we left last spring but we got a call
only days before our departure that
they would be closing. It was a bit
of a scramble but ended up in a
lovely airbnb in Nashua that would
allow our fur-babies. Actually an
incredible place and truly a step
up for us. The dogs had a fenced-

sack out in.
They went with us almost every
day and it was clear that Luna was

Where were you on Christmas day of 1979?

We don’t know how many of you checked out that
histogram put together by the National Weather Service
of Glasgow, published in Tuesday’s Buzz, but the one very
memorable “Brown Christmas” that stands out? We were
riding our Kawasaki 175s in the hills behind Duke &
Cindy Niesken’s house up there in the hills in 1979!
It was indeed Christmas Day, that’s where we were
spending Christmas, and it was so nice out — we’re
talking light jacket weather — that Roy Dean Jimison
and myself spent mid-morning and early afternoon
riding motorbikes between Duke & Cindy’s place and
the Stebletons.
You know, the hill that is now famously called
“Naked”, named by Steve Stebleton and his gang of
gangsters? Well, let’s just say that was one intriguing day
of motorcycle riding, making it all the way to the top of

And Cindy’s turkey turned out perfect to the
delight of us all who were gathered back on that day of
December 25th, 1979.
What a slam dunk of a day! Speaking of slam

He explains: “I started calling (Saunders) ‘the
professor’, and he started calling me ‘the doctor’. So
it was just between us...we were buddies, we had our
nicknames and we would roll with the nicknames. ...
And that’s where it came from.”
Erving recalled that “later on, in the Rucker Park
league in Harlem, when people started calling me ‘Black

me anything, call me ‘Doctor’”.
Over time, the nickname evolved into “Dr. Julius”

A police car pulls up in front of grandma Bessie’s

The polite policeman explained that this elderly

find his way home.
“Oh Morris,” said grandma, “You’ve been going to
that park for over 30 years ! So how could you get lost?”

Once we get that perfected that will help.”
Against Sidney we were down two starters so we

Graham was missing kids so she had to play
