n was the best-looking machine of the calcutta before
s. the Northeast Montana Fair’s Milk River MotorSports
Class 1 (chain & bang) Demolition Derby got underway.
Echoing the White Indian yesterday, Pinto Bilger said
this was the best derby he has seen in a long, long time,
mentioning that it was an action-packed and very well
ran by the MRM crew. He especially loved the chain &
bang heat: six cars, winner take all, and it came down
to the car above and another derby veteran, Shawn
Wersal. Derf got in the best licks as he was awarded
the “Mad Dog” trophy, but Shawn managed to eke out
the victory, leaving Derf in second. Shawn’s younger
brother Darrin Wersal took third. Back to Pinto, he’s a
derby veteran himself but didn’t have a car put together
for this year as he has been too busy with his new
business, Soma-Dis Deli. But we’ve got a hunch he’ll
have an Imperial locked and loaded for next year.

OBITUARY
LaVern Stellflug
LaVern Gene
Stellflug passed away
peacefully on July 25,
2022, in Kennewick WA
after suffering a stroke in
April of 2022.  He was 79.  
LaVern was born
on January 1, 1943, in
Opheim MT.  He grew
up in Opheim and married Judy Stuber. They had 4
children and raised Judy’s younger brother Buster as
their own. The family farmed west of town for several
years.  His love of farming and Percheron horses kept
him busy for many years until he eventually moved to
Pasco WA to be near his kids and grandkids.  Vern’s
love of horses never wavered.  He enjoyed roping and
just taking a long ride.  He loved talking about the old
days and remembering all the stories of the “old timers”. 
Vern tried to make it to every event the grandkids were
involved in.  He loved getting together with family and
watching the grandkids grow up.  He learned to fish,
whether he caught anything, it didn’t matter.  He was
always ready for a good cup of coffee and a cookie with
friends.
Vern was preceded in death by his parents, Joseph
and Jeanette Stellflug and his brother Duane Stellflug.
He is survived by his children Gene Stellflug (Cyndi),
Sue Hays (Jim), Bob Stellflug (Michelle), Shandy Hipke
(Ben) and Buster Stuber; grandchildren Jamie Flynn,
Roseanna Hoffer, Kailee Hipke, Grace Hipke, Madison
Hays, Ariana Hipke, Joe Hays; great grandchildren
ShyAnne Thorne, Jasmine Hoffer, Brooklyn Hoffer,
Tyler Peterson.
A celebration of life is planned in Pasco, WA on
September 17th, 2022.
A graveside memorial service will be held in
June 2023 in Opheim MT at the Lawndale Cemetery,
just outside of Opheim, a reception will follow. More
information will be available as time gets closer.

Holy Smoke, We think We have Already been WOKED!

The definition of WOKE on that wonderful system
called the internet, varies from raunchy to “factual”, if
you can believe that.
Merriam-Webster and Fox News have one version of
a definition and the Urban Dictionary has a more risque
version verging on vulgarity. Even Funk and Wagnalls
have a definition. Quote: WOKE is an English adjective
meaning “alert to racial prejudice and discrimination”.
However I opted for the Urban Dictionary
description. Look it up. You might get an eye opener.
It’s nasty!
But on the contrary, we have been “WOKE” for
years starting with our childhood. Our parents were
aware of people being “different” in their beliefs or
attire. Even in mannerisms or difference of opinions.
We grew up understanding that there were different
races, color of skin, likes and dislikes for years. Why we
had the “HIPPY” movement way before the “WOKE”
movement. The “WOKE” people think they invented a
new trend.
NOT!
Smoking “buds” or weed has been around for a
long time. “Maryjane” over in Hawaii is called Pakalolo!
A cultivar of marijuana said to be the world’s best!
Dunno!
Why one of my college professors, Martin T.
Swanson, put it in his perspective when asked what he
thought about the HIPPIES by remarking to the class
that all they are is a bunch of dirty kids that will grow
into adulthood, hopefully…
Now, someone came up with an idea or rather
an excuse to force “WOKE” beliefs upon us and even
our children or grand-children who, by the way, have
enough on their plates just deciding what toy they
want to play with or what hero to portray in their daily
routine. Their marshmallow grey matter is sloshing
about in that cranium of theirs with confusion and are
easily led astray by outside influences.
Just let the kids be “kids” and get them away from
that damn “Lookity Box” that they sit in front of for
hours being taught things that they do not need to
know! They have little enough time to decide on their
own what they want to be without outside influence
from someone else.
You have all heard the expression “Life is too short”,
well, childhood is too damn short, also!
But on another note, we kinda enjoy the “WOKE”
people walking and in some cases staggering around
with their multi colored hair and body art and in some
cases nose and lip rings. Some hair styles have their
manes pointed up in the air like a porcupine that had an
encounter with a swathing machine in the field. Torn
jeans with body parts hanging out in all directions.
My mom made me throw my jeans away when they got
that way. Now they are worth a small fortune!
Florence Joyner, an Olympic athlete wore an outfit
that only had one pant leg and if that wasn’t woke,
nothing was. The whole world became “AWARE” of
it. That’s what the definition of woke, by the way, is.
Making people aware of differences.
As if we did not see it on our own.
But in all fairness, as I alluded to earlier, we like it.
Why? Well, because we like that time of the year that
only comes but once a year. October 31! Halloween.
Becoming “AWARE” of these types of differences makes
almost every day Halloween! Yep, we love Halloween!
So keep up the “WOKE” adventure. It is colorful!
