CITY COLLEGE KEEPS STUDENT WORK-STUDY JOBS,

DESPITE STATE WIDE BUDGET CUTS
CHICAGO The City College administration has just announced that it will make a 5%
cut in all hours in the student work-study program. This decision comes just after the
Federal Government announced a 5% budget cut in funding for work-study programs at
all colleges and universities.
Director of Student Work-Study, Alexandria Manriquez, met with City College President,
Lauren Peterson, to discuss possible solutions to the deficit. The City College
Administration then came to the unanimous decision to keep all students currently
enrolled in the program. However, they decided to reduce their hours in order to abide by
the Federal Governments 5% budget cut. We had to make a compromise, but I think we
made the right decision, stated Manriquez, We want to ensure that all students enrolled
in the program are able to continue to utilize everything the program has to offer. In
addition, The City College Administrations has offered more resources in their career
center on campus, from career counseling to offering different programs to help with any
financial losses due to the budget cuts.
City College is an urban two-year institution with approximately 15,000 students. The
student work-study program has been successfully operating since 2010 and currently has
approximately 3,000 students enrolled in the program.
