Week of June 13-17

Monday June 13
At LGO, we worked with 2nd grade students on sound-letter correlation by
having them match sounds to letters and vice versa, we also worked on spelling words
with similar sounds and syllables using alphabet tiles and also handwriting them, we also
played a memory game using tiles with vocabulary words on them and their
corresponding picture, which helped them with memory, reading, and sight word
identification. We each worked with a child individually while doing these activities. We
have been doing our best to work with the same students so that we can keep track of
their progress, but sometimes we work with others because of absences, scheduling, or
other factors.
Tuesday June 14
At Jaime Torres Bodet we worked with 3rd and 4th grade students in groups of 23. We played a sight word memory game where students had to match a word to a
picture. Then, we read to the students and some of them volunteered to read portions of
the stories. The stories were of their choosing. The students were asked questions
before, during, and after to assess background knowledge and comprehension. After the
story was read, students were asked to write three sentences about what they learned,
found interesting, or anything else.
The Jaime Torres Bodet teacher (our person of contact) gave us a list of students
all the teachers would like us to work with. We came up with a plan of action for working
with these students from now on.
Wednesday June 15
At LGO, we all helped administer tests by providing assistance to students who
needed help reading the instructions or if they did not understand a question.
Thursday June 16
At Jaime Torres Bodet we met with first, second, third, fourth and fifth graders in
groups of 3-4 students for about 45 minutes each. With the first graders we played a
memory game that had a vocabulary word to match a picture. The goal of this game was
to practice reading words. With the 2nd and 3rd grade group we practiced spelling words
using alphabet tiles and read a book together. We then focused on reading with the 4th
and 5th grade groups, they were very interested in a book about the solar system. Each
student read a page and we asked questions to check their comprehension and they
also wrote down some of these answers to practice writing sentences.
Friday June 17
Fathers Day Festival: no work with students

Week of June 20-24

Monday June 20
At LGO, we all helped administer tests by providing assistance to students who
needed help reading the instructions or if they did not understand a question.
We also played an animal Bingo game with a 2nd grade boy. Us and the boy
took turns reading off the animals, which helped him with his decoding. Then we
changed the game a little by naming off the initial sounds of the animal name instead of
reading the whole word, which helped him a lot with his letter-sound correlation.
Tuesday June 21
At Jaime Torres Bodet we met with first, second, third, fourth, and fifth graders in
groups of 3-4 students for about 25 minutes each. During last weeks groups, several
children had expressed interest in volcanoes. We brought the story of Popocateptl and
Iztaccihuatl, the Mexico city volcano leyenda/myth. We asked the students questions
before starting the story to activate prior knowledge. We also showed pictures of the
story to the children. When reading the story, we would stop to ask questions and
explain words that the students may not understand. After, we also asked them to write
about what they learned or what they found interesting. Some students shared their
thoughts verbally.
Went to Resplandor to assist Naya with organizing the books for the library.
Wednesday June 22
Attended ceremony at Jaime Torres Bodet
Thursday June 23
Dalilah and Hilary: At Jaime Torres Bodet we read the book Los Tres Cerditios
with the 1st and 2nd/3rd grade students we work with. We asked them many
comprehension questions throughout the story and stopped to discuss the meaning of
words they did not know. WIth the 4th grade group we had them read a book about
crocodiles and alligators to work on their reading fluency. The students were very excited
about the book and summarized each page they read. We then had them right a few
sentences of what they had learned or found most interesting. The fifth grade group did
the same thing as the fourth grade book but decided to read Los Tres Cerditos.
Veaney: Went to LGO and conducted the Cross-Cultural Interview with the
USAER teacher (Sarahi).
We also went to Resplandor to help Naya organize books for the library.

No School

Week of July 4-8

Monday July 4

At LGO, we worked with different students each and also as partners. We worked
with Valentin, Sinai, Cesar, Miguel Angel, and Luis Carlos. All of the students are in 2nd
grade except Miguel Angel, he is in 1st grade. We worked on building sentences out of
words chosen from a pile of words. With some of the students we focused on 5-6 sight
words and had them participate in different activities to practice the words. We also
played games with the letter tiles like spelling words given, spelling words they know,
etc.
Tuesday June 5
At JTB The teachers asked us play integrative games with the 5th and 6th
graders. We showed them how to play an american game and they taught us how to
play a mexican game similar to capture the flag.
Wednesday June 6
At LGO, we all worked with 2nd graders with their reading and spelling. We used
the same 5 words that they have been working on so that they could retain them, as
opposed to using too many different words. We used word tiles and letter tiles. We read
the words and had them identify them and also had them read the words individually.
Then we gave them each word and had them spell them using the letter tiles. With 2
other 2nd graders, using the 5 words to create sentences and then had them write out
the sentences.
Thursday June 7
At JTB we worked with 4 first and second grade students for about 30 minutes
per group. We read a book called inhalar y exhalar, and asked many comprehension
questions as we read. We also gave them the opportunity to read a paragraph fir those
who wanted to.
Friday June 8
We worked on our Resplandor Internacional workshop plan and on our Escuela
Normal Conference script and presentation.
