Dear Dr. Bruce,

My objective this semester has been to improve my prewriting skills to better
focus to purpose of my documents. Part of this includes brainstorming as well as being
able to create a more effective rough draft. To accomplish this I have chosen
documents for the portfolio which each apply to improving my skills at rhetorical focus,
and collectively demonstrate mastery of all the student learning objectives.
I chose to revise the Group Charter for the major assignment in the writers
portfolio. The original document was written by many group members, and successfully
creating a final draft demonstrates collaboration. The document also contains citations
to outside sources on conflict resolution. The document also follows the memo format to
organize and format the sections into distinct categories.
The first minor assignment I chose to include is the Writers Notebook entry on
the analysis of cover letters. The focus of this document was to critique the original
works in an informal tone to Dr. Bruce. By including citations to evidence presented in
the sample works I was able to improve my skills at citation, and by combining related
observations to practice organization of the ideas.
The next minor assignment in my portfolio is the reflection on my writing process
from the Writers Notebook. The audience for this informal document is myself, to
acknowledge how my prewriting and organizational skills have improved over the
semester. By improving my organization I was better able to focus the purpose and
themes of my writing.
