Five Terms of Porphyrius

Porphyrius based his Five Terms or the Eisagoge on Aristotles predicable, the Species,
Genus, Propria, Differentia and Accidentia. Species refers to the essence of the statement of
things. Genus is a collection of definite things that exist in certain deference relatively in one
thing and with others. Property is defined as what happens to some specie alone, may be not to
every individual, happens also to the whole species. Difference is said to be differed from
another in common from its differing in some respect in diversity of nature, either from itself, or
from something else. Specific differences can be inferred into class, quality or rational.
Difference agreeing to a thing renders it different, but differences in corporate and appropriate
render it different in quality, and the most proper render it another thing. Accident receives a
two-fold division, first is the separable and the other is he inseparable. It is concurrent in every
situation but also absent without the destruction of its constituent. It may be neither genus, nor
difference, nor species, nor property, yet is always inherent in a subject.
I believe that the five terms have really something in common. It is also stated that those
things, such as genus is founded on the species and individuals under it. Moreover, difference are
also in like manner while species of the individuals under it and property, both of the species, of
which it is the property, and of the individuals under that species. Accident is also established in
both of species, and individuals. These terms should not be mistaken but it be ought to serve as
guide in dealing with different aspects of idea and circumstances. I also conclude and consider
Porphyrius as an inquisitive individual for the investigation and analysis of these five terms since
it is useful for those things which belong to division, distinction and demonstration.
