We continue to reflect and keep record of Beyoglus

values through our magazine that has reached its 21st
issue. This collection has become a symbol of our faith in
Beyoglu.

temizledik ve bylece Kasmpaann itibarn fiilen
iade ettik. krler olsun. imdi, bu gzide semtimiz
eskisinden de stn standartlara ve cazibeye kavutu.

Kasimpasa is the cover story in this present issue. Did you

know that the ships which were carried over land during
Istanbuls conquest were brought down to the sea from
Kasimpasa harbor? In other words, the oldest marks of the
Turkish history in Istanbul lie in Kasimpasa. Kasimpasa,
one of the bustling districts in Ottoman Istanbul, lost its
charm due to the pollution of the Golden Horn. Fortunately,
we have cleaned up the Golden Horn and thankfully
Kasimpasa is regaining a positive reputation. This
distinguished district now has better standards and has
recovered its upper class charm.

The artisanship in the district continues to mature through

the years, growing in artistic beauty and grace. Throughout
our history, artisanship has taken the leading role in
maintaining our mystic traditions. With all its shop owners,
Kasimpasas markets have also brought beauty to our lives
for last 500 years. From pastry shops to pickle stores, coffee
shops to pita restaurants, all of the shop owners greet us
with their delightful smiles, greetings, and conversations.
Id like to emphasize my appreciation of Mr. Hilmi Yavuzs
appearance in our magazine as he is such an important
philosopher and poet. Hilmi Yavuz inspires us through his
work and style while also representing a unique aspect of
Beyoglu. I believe that he has contributed to all of our lives
in some way either directly or indirectly when we were
growing up. I want to use my opportunity here to give my
sincere greetings to him.

one of Beyolus oldest
neighborhoods. Its the

giderseniz, younluk ve haliyle kuyruk dalm olacandan rahat rahat
sipariinizi verebilirsiniz. Frndan ateler iinde telala kan brek ve kekler
kahvaltlarmzn vazgeilmezleri... zerinde bol pudra ekeri ile servis edilen
sade brek, incecik alan ve st ste dizili 25 kat ince hamurdan yaplyor.

has been serving neighborhood residents
and visitors alike from various areas
since 1947. If you go during lunch hours
on the weekend, you can comfortably
place your order without waiting in
line. The breks and other pastries are
delicious, especially the plain brek,
which slightly resembles a baklava with
its 25 thin square strips of phyllo dough
served with plenty of powdered sugar. A
hot tea with this delicacy will go a long
way and provide you with some time to
muse. This is a great way to relax under
the shade of big, green leafy trees and
enjoy the day with the sweet scents of
the oven.

which comes from Gaziantep, is mixed with yeast and hot water;
then its put into molds and compressed against the shoulder of the
master. Once the rings are ready, they are cooked in hot oil and
ready to be served fresh in the morning. Those that have tasted
the rings here say you wont find a dessert this good anywhere
else. We must say we did end up licking our fingers. A definite
recommendation for anyone with a sweet tooth.

The Bahariye bakery has been serving more than 100 years on the Bahariye
Avenue, the busiest street in Kasimpasa leading down to the Golden Horn. With
its marble structure and old-style stone oven, the place literally takes you on a
journey into the past. Its trays filled to the brim, with baked goods. The vintage
frames on the wall, the yellowed leaves of the calendar, the round metal clock, and
even the chiming sound of an opening door all take you back to childhood years.
Previously the joint only sold bread but today in the showcase you can see flour
cookies, sesame bagels, and many other kinds of traditional baked goods that are
offered. Any of these will go a long way with a hot glass of tea. However, if you
dont want to miss on many of the savory goods you might want to come in the
morning rather than later in the evening. If you are short on time you can always
order a package of salty and sweet cookies and store it in your backpack for later.

Turkish corner buffet sandwiched between
buildings in a narrow alleyway with a couple
of tables and stools outside and a single table
inside. Two people would barely fit inside even
with considerable bending and twisting, but
enthusiasts dont mind leaning back against the
wall and enjoying their sandwich. Sba
is the name given to lambs head delicacy, a
specialty of this joint. Its said that customers
from places like Tuzla and Sariyer come all the
way here to taste this dish. Emin Tosun Bey, a
native of Nide and the third generation in the
management of this place, states that this is a
pricey meal because its made from curly-haired
sheep. He adds: Folks from Izmir learned to
make the s from Kasmpaa, and we from
the Greeks. This delicious dish awaits to be

many. The founder of this joint, Nizammettin
Bey, is from the Back Sea region. Open since the
late 70s, you can enjoy a long meal in the family
room found upstairs. Aside from classic styles of
pide, varieties such as mushroom, Trabzon cheese,
and pizza-like round specialties are also offered.
Before eating your pide, it may be a good idea to

of soup people have hopes of finding an open
shop in the middle of the night. As good as
the traditional lentil or yoghurt soup may
be, ishkembe is difficult to replace. One of
the advantages of being Kasmpaa is that
you can find everything you are looking for
even late at night, and on top of that not
just ordinary, but award-winning joints!
Geyikli is among Turkeys top 3 tripe soup
restaurants. The restaurant opened up in
1993 in place of a former theater. Master
Orhan says that the soup is comforting and
friendly to the stomach, indicating that all
of its spices are bought from the Egyptian
Spice Bazar. The colorful combination of
red and green spices over the soup reminds
me of a manti, the Turkish ravioli dish. The
restaurant offers other varieties of local
salted offal as well as khash dishes. To top off
your meal, you might want to try the sweet
turmeric dessert or the ashure pudding.

Founded years ago by Rahmi Bey, a young chef

was hired after the retirement of the 85 year-old
master himself. Adam Bey started to work at a
young age and today continues to implement the
skills of his former master. With its illuminated
shop sign and metal gate, the meatball joint
illuminates the adjacent square in the evening.
As he was about to close the door we paid him a
visit and he immediately put himself to work by
arranging the meatballs on the grill. He certainly
produces some great tastes in his tiny shop. By
the entrance, one notices a huge pot resting on
an aging barbecue. This is used to make his dry
beans and rice cooked over fire wood. The large
meatballs resemble their counterparts of the
Inegl region and are served next to carrots, a
green salad, and grilled onions, tomatoes and
peppers. Indeed, one doesnt get tired of such tastes
and pleasant conversation.

locals for many years in the same shop. This
love of pickles goes back several generations
and even though new generations are in pursuit
of different jobs, the family is still trying to
fulfill its responsibility towards its customers.
If you ask me, this is the type of historical
profession that needs continuity, especially in
Istanbuls more historic neighborhoods. Even
though no one clearly knows the benefits of
eating pickles, there are many who go crazy for
things like pickled carrot, cucumber, cabbage,
or tomato! Inside, wearing a white apron and
holding a large sharp knife, you will have the
pleasure of meeting Yaz Bey who will proceed
to tell you how he grows his own vegetables
in the fields of Anatolia. A native of Gedelek,
Bursa, Yaz Beys answers our inquiries
saying you can add lemon or vinegar to
pickles depending on your taste but that Turks
generally prefer lemon.

Hseyin Bey, a local of Kastomu region serves the local shop

owners in his restaurant since 1983. If we dont count the local
shopkeepers who come for soup in the morning or for a tray of
homemade food during lunch, the restaurant is not too crowded.
Luckily, since you are no shopkeeper, you wont have to rush
your meal and can enjoy it at a leisurely pace! Hseyin Bey loves
to talk but seldom does he have some time to spare in his busy
kitchen. If you take a look at the menu, you will notice the roast
meat and rice dish made of veal from the Afyon or Balkesir
region. All dishes using olive oil, except for the pilaf rice which
uses a little butter to give the smell we are so accustomed to. The
fries served along the roast meat dish are also very good. After
a hearty meal, which was extremely tasty, we recommend the
traditional rice pudding. Finally, after refreshing yourself with
moist towelettes, youll feel ready to hit the street again.

Kasmpaa by a family from Sivas.
This is the venue of the president
of the Istanbul Chamber of
Restaurentours and the Federation
of Turkish Restaurateurs, Sait
Bey. In the past, the restaurant
welcomed more artists than the
movie studios nearby. Today its
still very busy. Its a definite place
to stop by, especially if you want to
see young hands at work opening
up pide dough. Servers never forget
to offer lemon cologne for your
hands at check-out. The beautiful
and intense aromas of this place are
such that one falls hungry again
right before exiting the door. The
bread offered in the Iskender kebap
is extremely thin and delicious.
The meat is brought here from
Balikesir, Gonen, and Bandirma,
while the vegetables are brought
from Yalova. The The butter used in
the Iskender and the knefe dessert

Throughout its history, the Ottoman

Empire was an empire that looked to
the West and established political and
economic relations with European states.
Its closest relations in the East were with
the Safavid and Qajar dynasties in Iran.
Although mostly confined to the Balkans
and Middle East, geographically speaking,

early 1920s. Rather than political or
economic interests, the reason behind the
establishment of a Japanese diplomatic
mission in Istanbul lay in the friendly
relations that had recently begun to be
established between the two countries.
Komatsu, the Crown Prince of Japan,
visited Istanbul in 1887 during his trip
through Europe and presented Sultan
Abdlhamid II a badge of honor on behalf
of Emperor Meiji of Japan. This marked
the beginning of Japanese-Ottoman
friendship. The reciprocal concern by both
states in the Erturul Frigate disaster of
1890 and the Japanese-Russian War of
1904-1905 consolidated and cemented
this newly established friendship.

Today, the Consulate General of Japan,
known as the Old Office Building is located
on the Gmsuyu nn Avenue, and
continues to be the best reflection of the
history of Turkey and Japans friendship.
The estate was transformed to the
Japanese Embassy in 1921. The building
was rented by the Japanese government
during the most intense days of the Turkish
National Struggle. The Embassy was
opened in 1925 and was used as such until
the embassy moved to Ankara in 1937.

The Only Wooden Cnsulate

Building in Beyolu
The architect of this building, which
has served as the consulate building
for more than 60 years as well as
the residence of the consul general,
is unknown. During the extensive
restoration work of the building,
which took place a few years ago,
experts noticed that the building
had been transformed from a house
with a garden to a contiguous
house and expanded in order to add
more stories. Stylistically speaking,
the Old Office Building is a blend of
Rococo, Ottoman, Oriental, and Art
Nouveau styles.

The most distinctive feature of this

building compared to other embassy
buildings in Beyolu is that the structure
is wooden. At a time when Western
embassies in the region abandoned the
usage of wood, the Japanese preference
of this material can be explained by
their commitment to the classical
Ottoman and Japanese architectural
styles. Following the transfer of the
Consulate General in 2004 to the Tekfen
Towers, the building is used today as the
Japanese Cultural Center, and continues
to reflect the history of Japanese and
Turkish friendship.

You are among the most

important figures that have laid
the foundation of todays Turkish
Literature. Could you guide us
through your adventure, when and
how did it begin?
My interest in literature began in middle
school. I especially liked to read Omer
Seyfettin among others who were close to
childrens literature as well as literature
at large. My affinity with poetry began
in high school. My literature teacher
Behet Necatigil played a major role
in this. My first poem was called
Sabahlarn Trks and was published
in the school magazine called Dnm
on December 15, 1952. I think it was the
magazines 2nd or 3rd issue.
You follow in the footsteps of
Yahya Kemal, Ahmet Hasim,
Behet Necatigil, and Asaf Halet
Celebi. How would you describe
your style?
I have a unique understanding of poetry.
I believe that the poetry composed by a
poet should overlap or correspond with
the countrys intellectual or cultural
history, its mindset. Take, for example, the
history of our people. Ever since the 19th
century we have attempted to modernize
as well as protect our own traditions.
However, this does not mean that the
process of modernization abolished our
traditional values completely. Therefore,
even though there have been some radical
transformations during the time of the
Ottoman Empire and the Republic of
Turkey, our position as both a traditional
and modern society has continued. This
is why I would say that if we are going to
write authentic poetry in Turkey today,
without a doubt, it must overlap with this
history and mindset.

I care about my teaching position as well
as my poetry, and I think I do both of
them pretty well. I do many other things
wrong, thats why I can say Im good

you inspired by the most? Does
Istanbul inspire you?
Inspiration is only the first
verse. Other than that its just
a lot work. It is not possible to

know in advance what this first

verse will look like. This may be
related to Istanbul, or any other
thing. You never know. We can
never say anything about the
context in which that thing we call
inspiration will arrive.

some differences between the old
and current Beyoglu?
I live in Gmsuyu. Gmsuyu has not
gone through many changes, therefore
I cannot complain. Both my previous
home and my current one have been
in Gmsuyu, close to the Park Hotel.
Therefore, I have had the misfortune
of witnessing the tear down and
reconstruction of the hotel in more than
one occasion. I could not sleep at night. I
think Istanbul, in general, is very noisy.
From time to time, I come here often. The
current circumstances of Beyoglu are of
course different from the Beyoglu of the
past. Its more crowded now.

When I read your poems I notice

the word summer is repeated
frequently. In Annem ve Akam
you say: My heart! Dont stop;
catch up to those old summers!
For some reason the hours remain
still Do you miss those days?
Those old summer evenings, for
example?
Absolutely. Summers mean a lot to me. It
is the only season I feel I can be my own
self. I dont feel like this other times of the
year. Both in winter and spring I get the
impression I exist for others. Whereas,

in the summer I enjoy being on my own.

Thats why summers are so important for
me. My poems about old summers have
certain nostalgia. Where are those old
summers? The hours remain still. They
dont take us back to those summers past.
My childhood summers were spent in
Anatolia, completely care free, at a time
when I spent my whole summer playing
games. Memories are the poet, says a
great French poet. Memories are the poet
indeed.

How do you spend your day? What

do you do the most when you find
the opportunity?
That depends on the day. My Saturdays,
Sundays, Mondays, Tuesdays all have
separate schedules. Holidays are a
different matter altogether. I have
two sons. One is 42 and the other 41
years old, both of them have boys.
Unfortunately they dont have any
girls. I love to be with them on the
weekends. Im always eager to see my
grandchildren. My 9 year-old grandson
calls me professor from time to
time. He writes tales about Hilmi the
professor. On weekends I often go to
sleep late at night and get up late the
next morning. I have breakfast with
my assistant; she is no different than a
daughter to me, at Savoy in Cihangir.
These are fixed things for me.

I visited that festival. I must say I
have way too many books. My son
says that I live in a gym and library.
There is nothing else than my books
and a treadmill in my living room. Im
a bibliomaniac so I have always been
interested in second-hand books. From

How do you assess the

contributions of the current
Municipality Mayor to Beyolu?
If you ask me, its not easy to be the
Mayor of Beyoglu nowadays. There
are many insistent people around with
very high demands. It is not so easy
to please people who live here. I think
the Metropolitan Municipality has
to step up here. For example, Istiklal
Avenue: because its a considered a main
avenue, its not within the jurisdiction
of the Beyoglu Municipality but under
the jurisdiction of the Metropolitan
Municipality. The avenue needs
to be improved. I love to walk, but
unfortunately this city is not walkable
anymore. I used to walk up and down
Istiklal with the late Tansuun Sezer, but
now it is not possible to do so. Its almost
inevitable that you will hit someones
backpack or shoulder.

What are you working on lately? What should your fans expect?
In the last 4-5 years I have attended several symposia and have read several long
papers. For example, I have written a paper for the Evliya elebi symposium. I have
attended a symposium at Gazi University, another one at Istanbul University, and
a second one on Ahmet Hamit Tanpnar at Mimar Sinan University. I have also a
symposium on Namk Kemal at Tekirdag University as well as a second one in Gazi
University on the language of Divan Literature. These symposium papers are very
long; they are scientific articles. I plan to collect them in a book. Currently Im trying
to insert the corresponding footnotes at the right places. I also have a series of books.
Two of my books, Gemi Yaz Defterleri and Bulank Defterler have been published.
Their new editions are about to be published through Yapi Kredi.

The Beyoglu Sports Club was founded

127 years ago by the Greeks living in
Istanbul under the name Hermes.
Hermes, the son of Zeus in mythology,
was renowned for his speed and
passionate character. The Club,
considered as one of the cornerstones of
Turkish football history, used the name
Pera Sports Club between 1914-1923.
Eventually, with the foundation of the
Turkish Republic, it was finally named
the Beyoglu Sports Club.
The Beyolu Sports Club also contributed
to the foundation of two important clubs
in Greece. When the population exchange
started in 1922, a big portion of the
Greek population migrated to France,
New Zealand, Canada and Greece.

the best sports clubs in Greece. Those
who moved to Athens, on the other hand,
founded another top tier club called AEK
(Athlitiki Enosis Konstantinoupoleos).
AEK, translated as Istanbul Athletic
Association, is represented by its
yellow & black colors. PAOK is also
an acronym that can be translated as
Sports Club of Thessaloniki originating
from Istanbulites. Hence, it is possible to
say that they are both follow-ups of the
Beyoglu Sports Club in Greece.

connection with those two teams. Now,
we are all alone, but still active in spite
of having no budget at all. We keep on
having football, volleyball and basketball
branches within the club. He adds:
Sports in the past was performed with
an amateur soul, but now its been
carried out in a professional way. Clubs
cannot survive without a sponsor.
However, these days, sponsors mostly
support big clubs. We are having
extreme difficulties to find sponsors. Our
suggestion to provide small clubs with

can have a chance to survive. Companies
may also provide support. All in all,
keeping young people exercising is such
an important job- and thats what we
do!
The Beyoglu Sports Club has longstanding branches like rowing, table
tennis, weight lifting, and handball. The
club has also raised countless football
players who have become popular and
successful in the local league as well as
managing to play in topflight divisions.
Lefter Kucukandonyanis- also known as
the Professor, Nikola Buyukvafiadiskonwn as Shortie- and another

national team player Kadri Aytac, were

all among the most successful ones who
were raised in the Beyoglu Sports Club.
In addition to its success stories, the
Beyoglu Sports Club boasts being the
club that sparked the football craze in
the county. The first late night game was
played between the teams Beyoglu and
Fenerbahce, on the 9th of September
1933 at 9 pm in the Taksim stadium.
The lighting was supplied with the navy
lamps hanged between the posts along the
sides of the stadium. Fenerbahce turned
out to be the winner with a score of 4-2.
The club won an Olympic medal in
weight lifting and won various games in

volleyball, basketball and football, thus

becoming the champion in the European
and Mediterranean games.
The deep-rooted Beyoglu Sports Club is
the spiritual father of two giant clubs
in Greece, but it has also managed to
leave its mark in Turkish sports history
through its numerous accomplishments.
Mr. Taki, one of the clubs managers
says that with their amateur soul and
almost non-existent budget, they make a
great effort and contribution to improve
Turkish sports culture. He goes on to
say: We believe that, with its enduring
excitement and dynamism, this club
will attain better circumstances and
even greater victories in the coming
future. Long live Beyoglu! Long live the
irreplaceable club of the giants!

As a matter of fact, the first school for
the hearing impaired was opened in
1889 by Munif Pasha, who served as the
Minister of Education during the time
of grand vizier Kamil Pasha. The idea
of educating individuals by taking into
account their specific conditions has
been maintained since those early years,
especially thanks to improved technology
and better functioning systems.
Halicioglu School, which continues this
tradition, is located in the Halicioglu
neighbourhood of Beyoglu.

Collection campaign led by the Beyoglu
Municipality and ended up winning the
bicycle and tablet prize for its students.
The Halicioglu School for the Hearing
Impaired is also very successful in its
extracurricular activities. The school
team was 2nd in the Istanbul Football
Tournament and thus got the chance
to join a national football tournament.
Additionally, a rhythm club was
established recently for the students
who want to express themselves through
music. The club has just started to meet
and play music on a regular basis.

become a popular institution and is
considered an inspiring example thanks

The Turkish word for mosque, cami,

comes from Arabic and means
that which gathers, as in gathers a
community. The cami is a temple with
at least one minaret on the outside
and a mimbar (pulpit-like stucture)
inside where Muslims spend their
time in prayer, especially on Fridays
and religious festivities. In the past,
buildings containing a mimbar were
denoted as cami whereas those that

didnt where called masjid. This

was due to the fact that the lack of
a mimbar did not allow for Friday
sermons and prayers. In TurkishIslamic tradition the basic structure in
the formation of a new neighborhood
was the masjid. Even though some
neighborhoods may have more than
one masjid, the biggest and oldest one
is generally the one that gives the name

The Firuzaga Masjid

The Masjid, of which we have scarce
historical information, is located in
a small corner of the square with the
same name as the intersection between
Sraselviler Avenue and Defterdar slope
in Cihangir. J. von Hammers German
translation of an Ottoman document
titled Hadkatll-Cevmi informs us that
the founders son died 1640-41. Today,
the masjids door posts a sign bearing
the dates of 1490-91. At such early dates
there were very few structures here, so it
seems unlikely that a masjid would have
been built here so early.

On March 1, 1823, after a fire took place

in Cihangir, the masjid was destroyed.
Shortly after, Sultan Mahmud II (182324) completely rebuilt it giving it its
present form.
Some mosques and masjids, such as
the Tahtakale Rustem Pasha Mosque,
are often referred to in old records
as tahtani or fevkni. Tahtani means
located below, in the sense that the
structure was entered through ground
level. Fevkni means located above and
the above here means that the structure

rested on top of shops found on the

ground floor.
In light of this information we can say
that the Firuzaga masjid, at least after
the fire, was a fevkni structure. Most
likely the earlier structure was a tahtani
or some other single-storied building.
Since Cihangir was a center of commerce
during the reign of Sulta Mahmud II, it
seems natural that the lower levels be
planned for shops.
The inner space is decorated with
chiseled baroque era designs. The round
arched-shaped structure that extends
beyond the niche is also chiseled and
decorated with marble imitation stucco.
A wooden mimbar of the period lies side
by side with a more modern pulpit in the
inner space.
On the right-hand rear section of the
mosque, one can spot the single balcony,
a cone- shaped brick minaret. The
masjids large garden also includes an
octagonal fountain. A mention in the
Hadkatll-Cevmi, lets us know that
the mimbar was built by a philanthropist
named Emine Hanm at a later date.

Tarlabasi region is now ready for a big change goes hand in hand with
the great renovation project of Beyoglu Municipality. In other words, this
region is about to reborn from its own ashes. Old, destroyed and abandoned
buildings in addition to relatively small houses with a size of 40-50 m2 only,

If we look at the history of Tarlabasi,

we see that the district was once home
to Beyoglus Levantine and non-Muslim
society. It was the home of the top-class
elite who began to move to Beyoglu in
1935 along with French newcomers.
After change in the residential profile due
to migration, the district experienced an
introverted life. Nevertheless, Tarlabasi
is now ready for the big changes that
will take place with the great renovation
project of the Beyoglu Municipality. In
other words, this region is about to be
resurrected from its own ashes. Old,
destroyed, and abandoned buildings
in addition to relatively small houses
of 40-50 m2, are being replaced with
more modern and aesthetically pleasing
structures.
The Urban Renovation Project in
Tarlabasi consists of renewing the
infrastructure of 269 buildings of
which 188 are registered. All of these
are located in a wide area measuring

the district, but also help the region to
integrate with the rest of the city by
providing a healthier, more secure, and
comfortable environment for living. With
the project, small-sized historical houses
are going to be combined in groups of 5
to 10 in order to constitute one big block.
In the combination process however, the
external walls and facades will entirely
be preserved.
All studies were undertaken
transparently with priority being
placed on mutual understanding
and consensus. Efforts were made to
answer all questions properly, and
upon negotiations, 70% consensus was
reached with the landlords. Thus, the
majority of them this obtained a chance
to get new houses and shops around the
area.
The main objective of the Tarlabasi
Renovation Project is to renew all
infrastructure and facilities including
numerous buildings that constitute a
dangerous and unhealthy environment
for the residents due to aging and

Beyolu culture. The district boasts a bright and deep-rooted
history and is an important center of daily life. Kasmpaa
has been home to different people groups throughout the
centuries, housing various religious beliefs, ethnicities, and
cultures within.
Sailors Headquarters: Kasmpaa is a rich and up-to-date
monograph that sheds light into the rich historical, social
and cultural heritage recorded in this district.
Prepared by Sleyman Faruk Gncolu and Esma Kayar
and published by the Municipality of Beyolu, this book
unveils the detailed history of Kasmpaa starting with the
Byzantine period, followed by the Ottoman, and finally
reaching the era of the Republic. The detailed population
data for each period found on the back of the book shows the
meticulous work put into it.
The history and details of the districts architectural features
are also found in this book. Plans of houses, fountains,
bridges, dungeons, cemeteries, as well as photographs from
archives bring to life the architectural and cultural heritage
of Kasmpaa. The history of seamanship, in essence the soul
of the district, is also analyzed through a study of economic,
social and cultural life in shipyards. This book explains in
detail the hundreds of years of historical heritage that has
brought Kasmpaa to the point where it is today.

Municipality has started
a campaign on collecting
waste glass and oil as part
of its initiative on preserving
natural resources. 25,700
students of 25 primary
schools in Beyoglu were
included in this campaign
where 25 tablet computers
and 125 bicycles were given
as gifts.

The 20th Annual Beyoglu Municipality circumcision celebration was
recently held at the Kasmpaa Kzlay Square in front of an excited
crowd where 500 boys stepped into manhood. Boys from families
in need were circumcised free of charge. The Beyoglu Municipality
Mayor Ahmet Misbah Demircan also attended the joyous festivities.

The Turabibaba Librarys first Years End Festival took
place in an event where Beyoglu Mayor Ahmet Misbah

opened by Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdoan in
2008, after the derilict building was transformed into an
educational and learning center.

Summer organizations held by Beyoglu

Municipality continue. One of the most
colorful of these was the annual rice day
held in the Okmeydan Town House.
Attendance was massive. Dozens who
gathered together in the town house
garden hugged each other, giving a
message of unity and solidarity.

As a part of an EU project that has

been running for 4 years in the Beyoglu
Municipality, IdA (Integration through
Exchange), our youth traveled to the
German cities of Bremen and Hamburg.
This project which gathers German,
Dutch and Beyoglu youth together is
held with the cooperation between the
Beyoglu Municipality, the Dortmund
Municipality, a German foundation that
generates projects for youth (ISB), and
the Heerlen Arcus High School from
Holland.

Founded to fill the rising need of jobs in Beyoglu, BEYIM
(Beyoglu Welfare Center) was opened through the work of
Minister Faruk elik. Through investments made in the last
9 years, many neighborhoods in Beyoglu have experienced
economic mobility. According to the Social Security
Association data, 35,000 new jobs were raised primarily in
the tourism and services industries.

architect Sinan Genim, the Pera
Museum has exhibition halls
on all five floors. Founded with
the collections of Suna and nan
Kra, who are wife and husband.
The museum features Anatolian
weights and Measures, Ktahya,
China, and Ceramcs, and the
works of European orientalist
Painters.
