A FORMAL EMAIL

1. TARGET READER: The reader is likely to be either someone superior to the writer or
someone who the writer does not know.
2. ORANISATION / FORMAT OF THE DOCUMENT: The following opening and closing
formulae should be used. As in a formal email, a final sentence is sometimes used to
conclude the email.

Opening: Dear Teacher,


Closing: Best regards, sincerely
Final sentence: I look forward to hearing from you soon

3. TYPES OF LANGUAGE: Formal register is used. This includes using appropriate


grammar, without contrations, and vocabulary.
4. HOW SHOULD I STRUCTURE A FORMAL EMAIL? This is an example:
Dear Teacher,

I am writing to tell you about our progress in this second term.

Our team has finished the first step. This is about looking for some information in relation
to our topic.

Nowadays, we are going to send you two more different websides about the special
celebration.

We also expect to receive this information soon. Meanwhile, we are starting with the third
step, the essay.

We look forward to hearing from you soon.

A DESCRIPTIVE ESSAY

1. TARGET READER: Your teacher.


2. ORGANISATION / FORMAT: Essay should have a title. Ideas should be arranged in a
logical manner.
3. TYPE OF LANGUAGE: Wide range of descriptive language. There should be good
use of adjective and adverds that make the description interesting t oread. Semiformal register is used. This includes using appropriate grammar, without contrations,
and vocabulary
