Week of: December 11, 2016

Reading

Kindy News 15

-We read several different versions of The

Gingerbread Man and compared the
differences and similarities in each story.
-We continued our buddy reading during
reading workshop, and even got to read books
to our 4th grade buddies!
-We learned the sounds /v/ and /oo/ we
learned that /oo/ makes the sound in book
and the sound in moon.
-We learned the sight words away, here,
and help.
-We practiced writing sight words and making
word families in our guided reading groups
-We practiced identifying the middle sound in
CVC words (consonant-vowel-consonant like
cat)

Writing

-We continued working on our true stories in

writing workshop.
-We learned that we can start our narrative
writing with One day,
-We wrote about winter and used the word
because to explain WHY we like winter!
-In handwriting, we practiced writing the
letters S and A, we are almost ready for
lowercase letters!

Science

We had our first official Science

lesson! Our first unit focuses on force
and motion. We solved our first
scientific mystery and learned how
much force is needed to dig a swimming
pool. We learned about work words
like push, and pull.

Math

-We concluded our unit on measurement by

sorting the different measuring tools we have
learned about.
-We practiced writing numbers in order to 31
by completing December Calendars
-We are continuing to build number fluency,
focusing specifically on teen numbers and
numbers greater than 20.
-We began our study of number bonds.
Number bonds help students see the parts
and whole when writing number sentences.
We will be exploring number bonds more
intensively in January!
-We found different ways to make 3, 4, and 5.
We wrote addition problems for these
combinations.
-We practiced knowing our left from right

Other News
-We had a wonderful winter party Friday! Thank you
to everyone who helped organize the fun crafts and
games!
-Juliana was our Star Student this week! She shared
an awesome Show and Tell and her wonderful
knowledge of the Greek language!
-We celebrated Julianas birthday!
-We had a very exciting PAWS assembly where
students names were drawn and were awarded
prizes!
-We had a fun visit from our 4th Grade Buddies! We
made snowmen!
-On Thursday, we saw the Deerfield High School
Choraliers perform!

We loved fishing for candy

canes at our winter party!
