Handsworth Grammar School

I am an enthusiastic and hardworking fifteen-year-old, with an interest in

medicine as a career. My interest in medicine comes from wanting to make
people happy and confident, being able to change someones life for the better
and at the same time giving back to the community.

During my time at Bishop Veseys Grammar school and particularly over the last
twelve months I have grown, not only in confidence and knowledge, but also in
my understanding of responsibility and my role in the wider school community. I
have played a key role in all aspects of school life, from academic achievements
to accolades on the playing fields as part of the school cricket team, as well as
extra curriculum activities such as World Challenge and the Duke of
Edinburgh award. My experiences to date have allowed to gain excellent skills
for the future:
Communication: I have developed excellent communication skills through
various academic activities such as presentation and report writing in business
studies. Communication skills were also vital in my world challenge expedition,
where I had the experience of leading the group. Navigating and leading the
group in a foreign county was at times a struggle but it was important for us to
work together, understand our strengths as a team to achieve our goal
Problem Solving: While training for both world challenge and then DofE my
problem-solving mindset ensured that I provided and contributed to the tasks at
hand. My problem-solving skills have also helped me to resolve issues and work
out team tactics when playing teams sports such as cricket and football.
I.T: I have excellent IT skills, which I have further developed through my
participation with DofE, in which I build a mini-computer. I am competent with
MS Office, using Outlook, Word and PowerPoint for both my school work and
extra curriculum activities. I co-ordinated the sponsorship for my world
challenge expedition, using MS Excel to record and sum the monies received
from sponsors.
During year 10, I had the opportunity to undertake work experience at my local
GP practice, Hall Green Health. I thoroughly enjoyed my two weeks of shadowing
GPs and gained a better understanding of the role of the GP, which is much wider
than just seeing patients. I also gained a better understanding of what happens
behind the scenes, the business side, the running of the practice.
Further Hobbies: Enjoy reading, in addition to socialising with my friends, Part
of the school and local cricket team, Learning to play the keyboard.
