Greetings Byrd Families,
I hope this letter finds you enjoying a
warm and fun-filled summer
vacation. As many of you are still
thinking about your exciting vacation
experiences, we are working hard to
prepare for the 2015-2016 school year.
I am incredibly excited to serve as your
new Principal, and I am looking forward
to meeting all of you and your children
this fall.
Although I am new to Byrd Middle
School this year, I am not new to the
Henrico County School District. I am
beginning my 25th year working for
Henrico Schools; 6 of those early years
as a teacher here at Byrd Middle. For
the last 5 years I have served as the
Principal of Elko Middle school. I plan
to use my previous experiences and
knowledge of the Byrd school and
community to continue our tradition of
excellence.
Byrd has an outstanding faculty and staff
committed to preparing students
academically, socially, and emotionally.
We will explore learning through a travel

TDAP BOOSTER
Effective July 1, 2006, a booster dose of Tdap
vaccine is required for all children entering the
6th grade, if at least five years have passed since
the last dose of tetanus-containing vaccine.
Immunization record must be signed by a
health care practitioner. This is turned in to the

What is needed for an early dismissal?
A student must bring a signed note from the
parent/guardian and given to the first block
teacher. Students will receive an early dismissal
pass and should report to the main office at the
listed time. Requests for early dismissals are
not accepted over the phone.
A parent/guardian must come into the office
with photo identification and sign the student
out of school. Students will be released only to
the names listed on the Authorization to Pick
Up form completed by the parent.
Can I bring my cell phone to school?
Yes, but cell phones should not be visible or used
from the point of entering the bus at the
morning pick-up stop to exiting the bus at the
afternoon drop-off. When students are attending
instructionally related after-school activities
(tutoring, homework help, make-up work, etc.)
cell phones and electronic devices should not be
used. When students are released from these
sessions, cell phone and electronic device usage is
allowed. Cell phones and electronic devices may
be used when students are attending non-
instructional after-school events/activities as long
as the cellular phone or electronic device is not

How do I get medications to the clinic?
All medications (over-the-counter and
prescribed) must be delivered to school by a
parent and administered in the clinic by the
clinic staff. Over-the-counter medications will
be dispensed only with written parental
permission. A written physicians note is
required to dispense prescription medications.
Medication request forms may be obtained
from the school nurse. All medications must be
kept in the clinic in their original containers.

parking lots unless a parent is parking and
entering with the student. For safety,
always walk on sidewalks when entering
the building. At 7:50 a.m., students may
enter the building to wait in Cafeteria II
until 8:05 a.m. Supervision is provided.
Scheduled Early Drop-Off- There are
times when students are scheduled to
report to school early for tutoring sessions,
intramurals, etc. Those students need to
enter through the main entrance. Normal
time-Students must be dropped off in the
regular parent drop-off area and enter the
building from the C Hall entrance only.
Student Pick-Up Students should be
picked up no later than 3:20 p.m. Students
cannot stay after school or be on school
grounds unless they are part of a school
sponsored program/activity. Parents
picking up students in the parking lot are
to line up in the pick-up lane as space
allows. If the pick-up lane is full, parents
are to park in parking spaces. Parents are
not to block parking lot travel lanes,
entries, or exits. Issues to be resolved
between parent drivers are Henrico County
police matters not school matters.
Walking Students who are assigned to
ride a county bus, are expected to ride that
bus. Student walkers are determined by
the HCPS transportation office. Only these
students have school permission to walk to

BYRD SPORTS This school year Henrico County is piloting a

sports season. In the fall we have football,
girls basketball, boys soccer and girls tennis.
Tryouts will be held the second day of
school! Each student trying out must have a
completed physical card and an emergency
card on file in the main office. The physical
must be dated after May 1st of 2015.
Physicals before this date are not valid for
this school year. This physical will be good
for the entire school year. Each student
must also produce proof of insurance
(company and policy number) when
completing the forms. This is a county
policy and students are not allowed to
participate without insurance. School
insurance is available for a minimal fee.

PARTICIPATION IN MIDDLE
SCHOOL SPORTS
All middle school student-athletes must
maintain a minimum of a 2.0 GPA. A
semester or cumulative GPA may be used
to determine eligibility. Sanctions for not
meeting the minimum GPA requirement
are as follows:
6th grade student-athletes will be
informed of the 2.0 minimum GPA
requirement in an effort to prepare them
for participation in athletics in future
years.
7th grade student-athletes who meet
the minimum MSAC requirements will
be able to try out and participate with
less than a 2.0 GPA.
A 7th grade student-athlete cannot
participate in competition until
his/her grades have increased above
a 2.0 GPA. School administrative
staff will conduct a grade check two
weeks after the season begins to
determine full eligibility for those
student-athletes with a GPA below
2.0. If the student-athletes grades
are not above a 2.0 GPA after the
fourth week of the season, he/she will
be allowed to practice, but will be

competition for the remainder of the

BYRD MS IS RECYCLING! HELP US RAISE MONEY FOR OUR SCHOOL!

Byrd MS is participating in the Clothing-to-Cash Recycling program. Bring your old clothing, shoes, sheets,
towels, (all textiles) in ALL conditions and we will get paid for every pound collected! Its that easy!
Byrd MS has the potential of raising money throughout the year, while continuing green initiatives and
educating students on the benefits of recycling.

Byrd Office Assistant Team
BOAT is an excellent way to be a part of your middle schoolers life. No special background is
required. BOAT volunteers sign up for a particular 2 hour shift every month.
BOAT volunteers help the front office staff by answering telephones during peak times, taking
messages, checking on absentees, and assisting students. If you cant commit to a fixed date and time,
substitutes are always needed, because life (and sickness) happens.
You may pick up an application in the main office or email Kathy Johnson-Paul at
kjpaul@henrico.k12.va.us. We look forward to working with you!

Clip box tops and earn cash for Byrd! Each box top is worth 10 cents and that adds up
quickly. Money collected from box tops help fund student passports, student
programs, classroom grants, family events, 8th grade year-end activities, teacher
appreciation events etc. Thank you!
