1. Determine the maximum torque developed by a 3-phase induction motor and also
determine the corresponding slip. How they depend upon rotor resistance and standstill
rotor reactance?
2. Explain torque-slip characteristic of a 3-phase induction motor. Also explain the effect of
varying rotor resistance.
3. Discuss the starting of cage motors.
4. Supply authorities impose the installation of starters induction motor of rating above 3
h.p. Explain.
5. Explain why the starting torque developed by 3-phase cage motor is less than that of
identical rating dc shunt motor?
6. Show that the rated torque developed by induction motors is about one-half to that of
DOL torque.
7. Enumerate merits and demerits of stator rheostat starter, autotransformer starter and
star-delta switch with reference to cage induction motors.

Quiz-F (EM-II) 31.01.17

1. A three-phase, slip-ring induction motor gives a reading of 55 V across slip-rings on open

circuit when at rest with normal stator supply voltage applied. The rotor is star-connected
and has an impedance of (0.7+j5) ohms. Find the rotor current when the machine is (a) at
standstill with slip-rings joined to a star-connected starter with a phase impedance of (4+j3)
ohms and (b) running normally with a 5% slip. Neglect stator impedance. [4.11A, 2.57A]

2. Determine the torque exerted by an 8-pole, 50 Hz, 3-phase induction motor operating
with a 4% slip which develops a maximum torque of 150 N-m at a speed of 660 r.p.m. The
resistance per phase of the rotor is 0.5 ohm. Assume air-gap flux to be constant. [90 N-m]

3. A 3-phase, 4-pole, 50 Hzinduction motor has a rotor resistance of 0.1 ohm and standstill
reactance of 0.9 ohm. If the full load slip is 5%, determine the full load torque as a percentage
of the maximum torque. What should be the value of external rotor resistance per phase to
give half the maximum torque at standstill? Neglect stator impedance.
[75%, 0.123 ohm.]
4. A 3-phase, 4-pole, 50 Hz, 10 h.p. induction motor has, at rated speed and rated voltage
and rated frequency, a torque of 160% and a maximum torque of 200% of full-load torque.
Determine (i) full-load speed (ii) speed at maximum torque. Assume air-gap flux to be
constant. [1485 r.p.m., 1440 r.p.m.]
