Residential Information Sheet 2015-2016

2015-2016

A students dormitory room should feel warm and welcoming, and, as such, students may bring items
from home to decorate and furnish the rooms. Room arrangements must be neat, in good taste and
in accordance with fire and safety regulations. Student rooms are shared space and students should
work together with roommates to determine how to furnish and decorate their room.

Furnishings and Safety

Decorations must be appropriate and the Housemaster and Housemistress will decide if room
decorations are appropriate. Decoration cannot damage wall space and must be affixed to walls in
appropriate areas.

Lighters, matches, cooking appliances, hot water kettles or heating coils, space heaters,
refrigerators, halogen lamps, electric blankets, or any other devices that may create a fire hazard are
not permitted. There should be no potential for an open flame in any building.

Fire codes dictate ways that furniture can be set up and what may be used for decoration
:
The whole room must be visible from the doorway. Any barriers formed by furniture or fabric are
prohibited.

Hangings, pictures and posters must conform to the strict Shanghai fire code, which permits very
little paper or fabric on a wall.

No hangings or posters should cover or block any heat or smoke detectors.

No decorations may hang from the ceiling.

Students are responsible for the condition of their rooms at the end of the year. Any pre-existing
damage should be reported at the beginning of the year, and repair requests should be made through
the Housemaster or Housemistress during the year.

Valuables and Money:

Cash: There is little need for cash on campus. The few times when you might need
cash here at school are if you need to purchase items from the uniform store, or if
you are going on a school field trip off campus. Therefore we strongly discourage you
from bringing money/cash to school. If you must, we encourage you to only bring
small amounts.

/

Valuables: You should not bring expensive jewelry, personal items or clothes to
campus.

When or if you do bring money or other valuables to school, you are responsible for
their safety and security. Each student is provided a lockable drawer in his or her
dorm room. You should put all your valuables in there to ensure their safety.

Furthermore, we will not be able to conclusively determine what happens to lost
money or valuables. Personal items and/or money are your responsibility.

Bicycles

If you are a day student and you ride your bicycle to school, you must park your bike in
the designated basement (boys under F house, girls under C house). You should not
ride your bike on campus until you go home. In addition, a helmet is required when
you ride your bike.
