A/V AT UC MERCED ID BRIEF 2

Title or Topic of Module/Lesson: Understanding Classroom A/V at UC

Merced

Date this Design Created/Modified: February 14, 2017

General Overview/Need: UC Merced is the newest campus in the

University of California system and prides itself on integrating technology

into instruction. As such, our classrooms have a sometimes complex

integrated audiovisual (A/V) infrastructure. Due to the complexity, instructors

have difficulty understanding how and why the A/V systems can break.

Administrators have difficulty understanding the nature of the systems and

how that affects ongoing maintenance, repair, and replacement costs. The

intent of this eLearning module is to provide an interactive and easy-to-

understand overview of the A/V systems at UC Merced so that instructors

and administrators better understand the nature of providing, utilizing, and

maintaining these systems.

Time: 7 10 minutes

Delivery Method: Due to the conflicting nature of schedules of faculty and

administrators, it is best that this module be available asynchronously for

learners to complete as their schedule allows. Provided the instruction

electronically allows for on-demand access from any location. Congruent with

learning principles of multimedia design, it is best that this be presented to

be engaging and interactive, which can be achieved through the use of

eLearning software.

Audience/Learners: The targeted audience of this module is composed of

instructors and administrators at UC Merced. Instructors and administrators

have completed undergraduate degrees, with the majority having obtained

post-baccalaureate degrees as well. Many have spent the majority of the

career in academia, but vary in experience levels. Technical skill will range

from novice to expert, with the majority falling on the low to mid-range on

the spectrum. Learners are familiar with accessing and using online services

provided by the university.

Technical: The module needs to run on the standard web browsers: Chrome,

Firefox, Safari, and Edge. It should responsive for viewing on laptops and

tablet devices.

Conditions of Instruction: Accessibility must be provided in the form of

captioning for audio, and screen reader readability for text.

Learning Objectives:

From memory, the learner can explain the differences and

similarities between direct and integrated A/V systems.

While referencing a simplified A/V diagram, the learner

understands how to read the diagram to understand where a device is

and its relation to other devices in the diagram.

From memory, the learner can identify the definition of video,

audio, and control systems.

The learner is familiar with the types of devices common in the

classroom and can refer to their purpose in the classroom with

assistance.
The learner can articulate the ways in which instructors and

students utilize A/V technology in the classroom.

Assessment:

Multiple choice questions on:

o Audio, video, and control definitions
o Differences between direct and integrated systems
Interactive game centered around a simplified A/V diagram?
o Label the audio, video, and control connections

(lines) between the diagrams.

o Identify at least one of the following types of devices:

input, output, control.

o Identify the processor (brain) of the room.
Matching
o Match devices to their purpose.

Instructional/Cognitive/Multimedia Strategies:
