4
Duration

Description of Activities

Selection of Land

A plot of suitable size was chosen to cultivate the pak choi plants.

Land Preparation

The plot was prepared on the 8 th May, 2015. The land was cleared by hand pulling along with
the use of cutlasses, it was ploughed with garden forks and was chipped with the use of cutlasses
to disintegrate the large soil particles and organic manure (chicken litter) was incorporated with
the soil.

Transplanting

On the 10 th October, the pak choi seedlings were bought and transplanted on the plot.

Application of Insecticide

Triazophous was applied to the plants on 11 th May, 2015, measured at 10ml per litre to prohibit
and to get rid of pests that would cause damage to the plants and reduce its potential yield.

Application of Fertilizer

Hydroponics solution was applied to the plants at different intervals to give an increase in the
potential growth of the plants and to increase the yield.

Maintenance

The pak choi plants were watered thrice a day, the root area of the plants were aerated and the
removal of weeds were done when necessary.

Marketing

On the 16 th June, 2016 the plants were harvested by hand-pulIing , washed thoroughly and sold
to the school canteen at $36 per root.

12
Comparison of Projected and Actual Income, Expenditure and Surplus

The projected income was $1110 and the Actual Income was $1290. This occurred since
the price for pak choi was decreased to $30, whereas when the projected income was made the
market price for pak choi was $50. That was the reason why there was a decrease in projected
income and the actual income.

The projected expenditure was $1670 and the actual expenditure of $320 was incurred.
The actual expenditure was not high because the students were substituted as labourers so money
was not spent on wages . Also Neither pesticides nor fertilizers was bought since some pesticides
were remained from the previous batch which was used and chicken litter was used as fertilizer.
This created difference in the actual expenditure and the projected expenditure.

The projected profit was $730 and the actual profit was $970. This occurred since no
labour was hired since the students did the job themselves and because there was no need to
purchase fertilizers and pesticides. The increase in Projected Profit is 32.8%.

13
General Comments

The cultivation of the pak choi plants were successful since a high actual profit was made when
compared to the projected profit and they were taken care of properly. Due to the regular
irrigation of plants and the application of fertilizers and pesticides, the yield and quality of the
produce was increased making the produce attractive for sale. This enabled a profit to be made.
Also there was a decrease in expenditure since tools did not have to be bought because they were
provided by the school.

14
Conclusion

An income of $1290 and an expenditure of $320 was made resulting in a profit of $970 due to
the successful cultivation and production of pak choi which enhanced my cultivation skills.

15
Recommendations

During the cultivation of any plant I would recommend that weeds should be removed regularly
so that the plants would not be robbed of their essential nutrients for growth. To allow air to enter
the soil the root area should be aerated properly to allow this to happen. Also pesticides and
fertilizers should be applied to the plants at different intervals to enhance proper growth. With all
of these in consideration, the spacing should also be suitable to discourage clustering of crops to
enable effective growth and production.
