INTRODUCTION

Bharat Electronics Limited ;


(BEL) is an Indian state-owned aerospace and defence company with
about nine factories, and few regional offices in India.

It is owned by the Indian Government and primarily manufactures


advanced electronic products for the Indian Armed Forces. BEL is one
of nine PSUs under the Ministry of Defence of India. It has been
accorded Navratna status by the Government of India.

About BEL
Bharat Electronics Limited (BEL) was established at Bangalore, India,
by the Government of India under the Ministry of Defense in 1954 to
meet the specialized electronic needs of the Indian defense services.
Over the years, it has grown into a multi-product, multi-technology,
multi-unit company serving the needs of customers in diverse fields in
India and abroad.
BEL offers products and services in a wide spectrum of technology like
Radars, Military Communications, Naval Systems, Electronic Warfare
Systems, Telecommunications, Sound and Vision Broadcasting, Opto-
Electronics, Tank Electronics, Solar Photovoltaic Systems, Embedded

Software and Electronic Components. With its expertise
developed over the years, the company also provides Turnkey systems
solutions.

History
In 1954, in a newly independent India, the need was utmost to develop
indigenous industry. The dream of a self-reliant India gave birth to many
Public Sector Undertakings. Bharat Electronics Limited (BEL) was one
such dream, which has come a long way since then with the far-sighted
vision of its pioneers, the dedication and hard work of its employees,
support and faith of its customers and the Government of India. The
Governments clarion call for Make in India resonates with what BEL
has been successfully doing for over 6 decades.

From humble beginnings in 1954, when BEL was set up in association


with CSF, France (now, Thales), to manufacture basic communication
equipment, BEL now produces a wide range of state-of-the-art
equipment in fields such as Defence Communication, Radars, Naval
Systems, C4I Systems, Weapon Systems, Homeland Security, Telecom
& Broadcast Systems, Electronic Warfare, Tank Electronics, Electro
Optics, Professional Electronic Components and Solar Photovoltaic
Systems, BEL also provides turnkey system solutions. Civilian products
from BEL include Electronic Voting Machines, Tablet PC, solar-
powered traffic signal systems and Access Control Systems.

Starting from a single Unit in Jalahalli, Bangalore, BEL has established


its presence across the country by setting up eight other Units in
Ghaziabad, Pune, Machilipatnam, Panchkula, Kotdwara, Navi Mumbai,
Chennai and Hyderabad. Each Unit has a specific product mix and
customer focus. BEL has also set up a wide network of offices and

service centres countrywide as well as two overseas offices
at New York and Singapore.

Design & Manufacturing Services

Bharat Electronics today has an integrated approach and systems


capability, which is a direct result of its commitment to providing tailor-
made solutions to the customers through its philosophy of quality
management.

BEL has set up impressive infrastructure and manufacturing facilities


spread over nine ISO 9001 / 9002 certified modern production units
around the country. The infrastructure is regularly upgraded with the
latest and state-of-the-art facilities.
Semiconductor Device Packaging

Bharat Electronics Ltd has been manufacturing Silicon Semiconductor


Devices with an infrastructure set up in collaboration with Phillips,
Holland. BEL has been upgrading the facilities continuously to keep
pace with technological developments.
Software Development

The Software group in BEL is powered by over 100 software systems


professionals whose experience covers application areas of Defence,
Space, Communication and Commercial segments. The Software
Development group works on various areas like embedded processor

applications, real time applications, graphics, CAD, CAE,
automatic testing and simulation.

Quality Assurance Facilities

BEL has set-up a separate Quality Assurance division with an


investment of around USD 4mn for the implementation of quality
assurance system throughout BEL. This division is engaged in a variety
of quality assurance tasks like:
