TERRITORY OF KING DRAGUTIN
In the political life of Stefan Dragutin we can perceive several periods. The first onfe
was when he was the co-ruler of his father Uro I and the young king at that time he didn't
involve much in the state affairs. The second period was related to his short independent
rule from 1276 to 1282. After that came the period of turmoil after Deevo from 1284.
when Dragutin owned the region he had kept for hinself after the handing over of the thro-
ne. From 1284 to 1316 the enlarging of bis territory and the conflict with his brother were
finished.
Territories of king Stefan Dragutin consisted of parts formed in different ways. Those
were, first of all, areas near the mountain Rudnik and Arilje, which were kept by Dragutin
sfter the agreoment in Deevo. He had also been given by Hungary the earliest in the se-
cond half of 1284 regional unit of Mava with Belgrade,and Usora and Soli in the north-
-eastorn Bosnia. The of Branievo was annexed to his estates in 1291 with the help of
king Milutin. Northern border of this territory was following the river Sava.
The main part of Dragutin's state was situated towards Hungary so that its fate was
connected with the development of Serbien-Hungarian relations.

ASPIRATIONS OF JAKOV NENADOVI TO THE POSITION OF THE UPRISING

LEADER

The science has for many years been well aware of two letters which were written on
March 23rd 1804 in abac by Karadjordje and his commander in chief Jakov Nenadovi.
But the attention was not payed to the fact that on that very day Karadjordje had been 300
km away from abac and had been conquering Kragujevac and met Jakov for the flrst ti-
me a month and a half later on 8th near Belgrade.
Judging by the all facts, these two letters were written to the metropolitan Stratimiro-
vi and marshal Genein by Jakov himself and Karadjordje signed them to give more im-
portance to the letters. However, he put his signature before Karadjordje's one to emphasi-
ze himself more because at that time Jakov had the ambitions to be Vod (leader).
These two controversial letters enclosed to the paper.

THE REGION OF VALJEVO IN THE SECOND UPRISING IN 1815.
Space and geographic position of the region of Valjevo had a great influence on its
importance during the second uprising in 1815. Both warring sides were well aware of that
fact and they tried to have power over it. Out of that reason the Turks watched over Pale
(Obrenovac) which had been attacked by the rebels and liberated on April 30. After a few
days the alndowners again conquered this bastion and the Serbs flnally liberated it on
9. getting Pale they opened the frontier to Austria thus gaining the advantages
which had the positive influence to the further course and results of the uprising. At the sa-
me time it was destroyed the land connection between Belgrade on one side and the region
of abac, abac and Bosnia on the other. conquering Valjevo on 16 the rebels libe-
rated considerable forces with wich they attacked the great Turkish army in aak. This
region served as a basis during hard battles in Mava in summer 1815. Upon the end of the
armed battles, in September, the region of Valjevo endured the main burden at providing
the Marali-Ali Pasha's army which arrived to Belgrade.

PORTRAITS OF NENADOVIS"
(paintings of L'ro Kneevi)
Under the headline Portraits of the Nenadovis" (paintings of Uro Kneevi) are
meant the portraits of the members of the Nenadovi family done by Uro Kneevi
(1811-1876) - a gifted painter of the Serbian classicism. On those portraits are represented
, Aleksa Nenadovi, the prince of Tamnava - Posavina, a national leader before the first
Serbian uprising; his brother - duke Jakov, a prominent rebel and two sons of prince Alek-
sa: Priest Mateja (warrior, diplomat, writer) and duke Sima Nenadovi. The portraits are
very important art source about the prominent rebels from the region of Valjevo - without
whom the history of the first Serbian uprising could hardly be imagined.
Portraits were made at time when prince Aleksandar Karadjordjevi (ruled from
1842-1858) wanted to mark the 50th anniversary of the first Serbian uprising besides other
things, by a gallery of rebels' portraits and the most loyal Karadjordje's followers and fri-
ends. Uro Kneevi was given that task.

 Kneevi established the galleiy of the rebels' portraits in 1852. by the portrait of Ka-
radjordje and until 1855. he has painted 16 portraits - among them were the portraits of
Priest Mateja and duke Jakov Nenadovi. Kneevi probably painted the portraits of prin-
ce Aleksa and his youngest son duke Sima Nenadovi after 1855.
Only Priest Mateja was still alive out of the Nenadovi Family whose protraits
Kneevi painted - at the beginning of the artist's work. He certainly helped the artist a
great deal in the art forming of the rebels' portraits gallery. Princess Persida was certainly
interested in the appearance of the Nenadovis' portraits, as well as her father Jevrem Ne-
nadovi, son of duke Jakov and father - in-law of prince Aleksandar. Persida was the wife
of prince Aleksandar Karadjordjevi.
As far as authenticity is concerned, it could be noticed that they might have been pa-
inted according to the nature, the other sketches copied from the various portraits or
they were done at random - by the description of contemporaries or according to the simi-
larity with the members of the family.
For the portrait of Priest Mateja is thought that it was painted by nature, but there
are some assumptions that it is a of the portrait done by some other painter. Historic
value of the portraits of prince Aleksa, duke Jakov and duke Sima Nenadovi which are
thought to be done at random, is very important because the appearance of these promi-
nent rebels - their general features and clothes - may serve as a source about people of
that time almost as a complete document.
The artistic value of the Nenadovis' portraits, painted by Kneevi, is also impor-
tant. It should be stressed that the quality of these portraits is not only in historic registrati-
on of the prominent figures - because the portraits are the reflection of the strong artist's
personality who put smething of his own, something personal in learned Vienna manner"
of the classicistic portrait, something that was classicistic Serbian" in its form and
contents.

GYMNASTICS, PHYSICAL AND MILITARY TRAINING IN THE
GRAMMAR SCHOOL OF VALJEVO (1870-1914)
Gymnastics physical training in the Grammar school of Valjevo has not been alwa-
ys present in regular classes. The first teacher was Kosta Ukrapina, a general-staff major.
Inustrious manager Milan Maksimovi has bought some gymnastic apparatus with the
help of the community and citizens of Valjevo and established School for physical trai-
ning" in 1876. so that this is considered as the beginning of the organized sports life
in Valjevo. The apparatus were used by both pupils and soldiers who helped in the con-
struction of the playground.
Like many European countries from 1882. to 1890. Serbija included physical and mi-
litary training as a subject in primary and secondary schools. In that period this subject
has been taught in the Grammar school of Valjevo by the officers of the Serbian army.
Physical and military training in Serbia was cancelled in 1890. because it had proved to be
a failure in the educational system. There has been an interruption in physical training un-
til 1898. when the Law of secondary schools included organizing of pupils games with the
elements of folk and modern games. It was also organized at the beginning of this century.
The pupils of the Grammar school in Valjevo were the first ones in Serbia to go in for mo-
untain climbing at the beginning of this century and they organized the companies of sco-
uts and mountaineers.
Special attention to the gymnastics as a school subject in the Grammar school in Va-
ljevo has been paid since 1908. The old-fashioned stereotype gymnastics gave up its place
to the modern one. Pupils took part in the School society. Football was played in Valjevo
just in this school in 1910. The school collection was enlarged all the time by new equip-
ment but the World War I stopped all activities.

PRESS AND PRINTING IN THE REGION OF VALJEVO DURING
THE WORLD WAR I (1914-1918)
The development of the press and printing in the region of Valjevo cannot be obser-
ved separately but only as a constituent part of the printing ie. printing industry in Serbia.
A general evaluation about favourable conditions for printing in that short period
(1903-1918) and about its rather faster progress in relation to the previous period would
not be a complete one without mentioning some obstacles which were anyway present.
One resulted from econimic and political position and development of Serbia and the ot-
her one, more direct, resulted from the relations in the printing production itself.

 In the fifteen-years economic and political life of Serbia several historical events took
place having a great importance for its further development. Each of them had big conse-
quences for the economic and political life in the country, as well as for the development
of printing. Some of the events as, for example, the final strengthening of the parlaimenta-
ry democracy after the assassination of Aleksandar Obrenovi (1903), had a positive influ-
ence on printing development. The same thing happened with the customs war although at
the beginning this event had caused the temporary insecurity in the Serbian market becau-
se of the instantaneous economic confusion: Annexation of Bosnia and Herzegovina had
a dual influence on printing. On one side the political polemics and national excitement
because of that event gave a lot of material to the press, but on the other side, at the time
ofthe crisis, culmination appeared almost general economic slowdown caused by the thre-
atening war danger which had a negative influence on printing. After the Balkan wars new
hopes for faster economic and social development appeared which resulted in new stimu-
lus for priting development, but only for a short time. The world war began which destroy-
ed many social and econimic goods of the previous development of Serbia including the
printing, too.
Because of the closeness of the front with Austria-Hungary Valjevo had a very impor-
tant military and strategic role in the first of the war (1914). In this city was situated
the command of the Drina divisional region and the supreme command headed by the
commander in chief Radomir Putnik. Big war events and victories of the Serbian army at
Cer, Lenica, Makov kamen (stone), Guevo and Jadar had the influence on appearing
new newspapers, their contents and character, as well as the other various printed materi-
als which helped in realizing the war aims of Serbia.
Relatively dynamic development of the press and printing was soon replaced by the
period of stragnation which began by the occupation of Serbia and this region in the au-
tumn of 1915. At that time, except the Official Magazine" (Slubeni list") of the District
imperial command in Valjevo, mainly orders, instructions, proclamations and the similar
were printed, intended as warnings to the enslaved population of the Valjevo region.
For the printing offices in Valjevo it could be freely sais that they played a great role
with their publications and possibilities in cherishing and developing the national pro-
gramme of Serbia thus contributing in making it real to cherish the liberation ideology
which served for liberation and unification of Serbian people.

S umm r
VISTAD" IN THE CREATION OF THE YUGOSLAV
MILITARY INDUSTRY
The enterprise Kruik" (former Vistad" and VTZ) played a great role in the creati-
on of the Yugoslav post-war military industry. With the help of the preservation of the fa-
cilities, machines, necessary tools and materials, as well as the relatively sufficient number
of workers, the production of grenades, hand and airplane bombs started in the enterprise
in Octobar 1944. The enterprise was particularly important in the period of the first five-
- plan 1947-1951 when it satisfied the Army needs by 90%. Kruik" also played an
important role in building new military factories (financial, material and personnel help).

Summary

ADMINISTRATTVE-TERRITORIAL CHANGES IN THE REGION OF VALJEVO

(1955-1990)
Our communal system was developed from the national-liberation committees. The
basis of the commune as a socio-political society in the public property of the means of
production, self-menagement of the workers in the associated labour and self-menagement
of the working people and citizens who, within the commune, sattisfy their individual and
comon needs.
In changed socio-economic conditions, the communities and the administrative dis-
tricts which existed before 1955. were not appropriate more. So, the radical changes in
the inner structure and territorial limits of the communities and districts were necessary.
Thus, in 1955. began the territorial enlargement of the communities.
Further development of our social and political system imposed the necessity for new
tenitorial changes which were done several times: in 1957, 1958, 1952, 1962, 1963, 1965,
1966, 1970, 1971, 1977 and 1979. All mentioned political-territorial changes had aimed at
creatio, development and strenghtenening of the communities as basic socio-political soci-
eties, economic totalities and better conditions for self-management and satisfacion of per-
sonal and common needs of the working people and citizens on their territory.
