Tutorial: 2 Date:

Exa.1
The following data is given for the hydrostatic step bearing:
Thrust load = 450 KN
Shaft speed = 750 rpm
Shaft radius = 200 mm
Recess diameter = 250 mm
Specific gravity of lubricant = 0.86
Specific heat of lubricant = 2 KJ/Kg.C
Viscosity of lubricant = 30 cP
Calculate:
(i) The optimum oil film thickness for minimum power loss.
(ii) Frictional power loss
(iii) pumping power loss; and
(iv) Temperature rise.
Assume that the total power loss is converted into frictional heat.
Exa.2
Use the following data given for a hydrostatic thrust bearing:
Shaft speed = 720 rev/min, supply pressure = 5 N/mm2, shaft radius = 0.2 m, recess
radius = 0.125 m, Oil film thickness = 0.15 mm, viscosity of lubricant = 30 cP, specific
gravity of lubricant = 0.86. Calculate: (i) load carrying capacity of the bearing (ii) flow
required in lit/min, (iii) frictional power loss, (iv) pumping power loss, and (v)
temperature rise. Assume that the total power loss in the bearing is converted into
frictional heat.

Exa.3
Use the following data given for a hydrostatic step bearing:
Thrust load = 400000 N, shaft speed = 700 rev/min, shaft diameter = 0.48 m, recess
diameter = 0.24 m, oil film thickness = 0.15 mm, viscosity of lubricant = 160 SUS,
specific heat of lubricant = 1.76 KJ/kg C, specific gravity of lubricant = 0.86. Calculate:
(i) supply pressure, (ii) flow requirement in lit/min, (iii) friction power loss, (iv)
pumping power loss, and (v) temperature rise. Assume that the total power loss is
converted into frictional heat.

Exa.4
A water cooled bearing having the following dimensions has operated at 600 rev/min
under 9000 N load with automobile oil for a number of years without any trouble. The
viscosity of this oil at the oil temperature of 50C is 0.050 kg/ms.
Journal diameter = 50 mm
Bearing length = 80 mm
Radial length = 0.025 mm
It is proposed to use bearings of this design in several new machines which are under
design.
(a) What changes do you recommend if a new machine operates at 300 rev/min?
(b) What changes do you recommend if a new machine operates under 18 KN?
(c) What changes should be made in oil if bearing is given radial clearance of 0.015 mm?
(d) If a new machine uses turbine oil whose viscosity at the oil operating temperature of
50C is 0.0225 kg/ms, what changes do you recommend?

Exa.5
A helical pinion is mounted on a vertical shaft and the shaft is supported on a hydro static
foot step bearing. The thrust component of the helical pinion is transmitted to the bearing
through the shaft. The pinion is transmits 75 KW power at 500 rpm. The normal module
and the transverse module are 6 and 8 mm respectively. The pinion has 14 teeth. The
nominal bearing pressure is 0.6 MPa. The ratio of recess diameter to shaft diameter is
0.70. Calculate:
(i) the diameter of the shaft;
(ii) the diameter of the recess; and
(iii) the supply pressure
Select the viscosity of lubricating oil so that the minimum oil film thickness is 20
microns and the power lost in pumping and friction taken together is minimum.

Exa.6
The following data is given for a 360 hydrodynamic bearing:
Radial load = 10 KN, Journal speed = 1440 rpm, Unit bearing pressure = 1000
KPa, Clearance ratio (r/c) = 800, Viscosity of lubricant = 30 mPa s.
Assuming that the total heat generated in the bearing is carried by the total oil flow in the
bearing, calculate:
(i) Dimensions of bearing, (ii) Coefficient of friction, (iii) Power lost in friction, (iv)
Total flow of oil, (v) Side leakage; and (vi) Temperature rise.
