Maximum time allowed is 60 Minutes.

Question#1 (1+4=5 Marks)

a. Density is intensive or extensive property? Provide reason to support your answer. (1 Marks)
b. Amercury manometer (p = 13,600 kg/m3) is connected to an air duct to measure the pressure
inside. The difference in the manometer levels is 15 mm & the atmospheric pressure is 100 kPa.

i. Judging from Fig. Pl, determine ifthe pressure in the duct is above or below the atmospheric
pressure. Provide reason to support your logic (2 Marks)
ii. Determine the absolute pressure in the duct. (2 Marks)

Question#2 (1+4=5 Marks)

a. What is quality? Does it have any meaning in the superheated vapor region? (1 mark)
b. A 100L tank contains 5kg of Refrigerant at a pressure of 0.16 Mpa. Identify the phase of the
substance, if it carries certain portion of saturated liquid then calculate the volume occupied by
the saturated liquid phase. (4 Marks)
Question#3 (1+4=5 Marks)

a. Can the boiling point of water be -10oC, give reason?

b. Complete the following table for referigerant-134a?

Question# 4 (1+1+3=5 Marks)

a. In the figure given below find the value of E ?

b. In an isothermal process, 3700kJ work is done by the ideal gas. Is this enough information to tell
how much heat is added to the system? If so, how much?
c. Consider a river flowing toward a lake at an average velocity of 10 m/s, density 1000m3/kg and
volume flow rate of 1000 m3/s at a location 100 m above the lake surface. Determine the total
mechanical energy of the river water per unit mass and the power generation potential of the
entire river at that location?

Question# 5 (5 Marks)

A rigid 10-L vessel initially water at 100C with initial internal energy, u1 = 675.76kJ. The water is then
heated until its temperature is 150C. Calculate the heat transfer required for this process. Also sketch
the process on T-v diagram?
