UNIT 10-11: REDUCED RELATIVE CLAUSES


There are three ways reducing an adjective clause to phrase.
1/ The subject pronoun and be form are omitted.
Example:
A/ The girl who is talking to my sisters our neighbor.
-> The girl talking to my sister is our neighbor.
B/ She is the person who is responsible for the interview.
-> She is the person responsible for the interview.
2/ It is sometimes possible to omit the subject pronoun and change the verb to ing form if there is no be
form in the ejective clause (using present participle).
Example:
This school has many students that got scholarships.
-> This school has many students getting scholarships.
3/ Sometimes, relative clause is reduced to past participle phrase.
Example: The food which is cooked in this sauce tastes very nice.
-> The food cooked in this sauce tastes very nice.
Exercises:
1/ Read the following sentences, underline the relative clause and reduce them into present past participle
phrase:
1. The man who is talking to my father is Mr Johnson
2. Thats the only road that leads to the lake.
3. Those who met you at the airport yesterday were very assistance and secretary.
4. The problem which was worrying them then was the environmental pollution.

2/ Turn the relative clauses to past participle phrase:

3/ Rewrite the following sentences, using relative clause instead of participle phrase:

Exercise 5: Use reduced relative clauses in place of the relative clauses

B. Cleft sentences in the active :
1. Subject focus : We use cleft sentence to emphasize the subject of the action.
It is / was + S + clause (S + V + )
Ex1 : My brother bought a new car from our next- door neighbour last Saturday.
It was my brother who bought his new car from our next- door neighbour last Saturday.
Ex2 : The man gave her the book. => It was the man who gave her the book.
2. Object focus : We use cleft sentences to emphasize the object of the action.
It is / was + O + clause ( S + V + ..)
Ex1 : My brother bought a new car from our next- door neighbour last Saturday.
It was a new car that my brother bought from our next- door neighbour last Saturday.
Ex2 : The boy hit the dog in the garden. => It was the dog that the boy hit in the garden.
3. Adverbial focus : We use cleft sentences to emphasize the adverb ( time / place / )
It is / was + adverbial phrase + clause ( S + V + ..)
Ex1 : - My brother bought a new car from our next- door neighbour last Saturday.
It was last Saturday when my brother bought a new car from our next- door neighbour.
Ex2 : - She bought him a present at the shop. => It was at the shop that she bought him a present.
B. Cleft sentences in the passive : Cleft sentences can also be used in the passive voice.
Ex1 : The boy hit the dog in the garden. => It was the dog that was hit in the garden.
Ex2 : A. I heard that a dog bit you yesterday.
B. No. It was the postman that was bitten by the dog.
