Observation Task 4: Observing a teacher during a Science Lesson

Objective
To observe Science teaching in action and begin to understand effective strategies for Science
teaching and learning in groups.

Procedure

You will need a copy of the Observation Table:

Before the Observation

Arrange to observe a lesson that focuses on Science and discuss the lesson with the
teacher beforehand so you can know the Objectives and the lesson development.
Ask the teacher what strategies she will use to help her deliver the lesson.
Get an idea of the Inquiry/experiment the students will do.
Objective: By the end of the lesson students will be able to know the butterfly lifestyle

Strategies: The 5 E's model


engage period: Teacher showed the students video about the human lifestyle.
explore period: Teacher hid different pictures of butterfly stages classroom and told
students to find it
explain period: By draw the butterfly lifestyle on the board and explain it to students and
showed them video
extend period: Teacher did activity in groups by let each group do the butterfly lifestyle in
the plastic plate by using some objects
evaluate period: Students answered the book questions in their own

Inquiry/Experiment: Showed the students video about the butterfly stages


During the Observation

Complete the Table and make notes in the appropriate column on:
How the teacher introduces key terms and engages students?
By draw for students the butterfly lifestyle in the board and asked students some
questions also, showed students video the butterfly stages.
The topic and how its introduced?
The butterfly lifestyle and she introduced by showed the students video and by
explain what she drew in the board.
How much of the lesson is teacher talking time?
The teacher talking period was in explain period which is when the teacher explains
what she drew on the board.
How much group work is used and if students are active participants?
The teacher used the group work in the activity period and that helped students to
work together and help each other.
What materials were used and their purpose?
The teacher used the videos to engaged and explaining also, used the board to draw
the butterfly stages to help students to learn in enjoyable way.
How much Arabic is used?
The schools that follow the ministry of education teach the math subject in Arabic so,
whole lesson was in Arabic.
