Notation

The Left Hand

Pull off and Hammer on:

Slurring the notes on the guitar either by pulling the finger off a string or by ‘hammering’ a finger on
a string, usually after plucking it. Represented in the score either with a ‘P’ or ‘H’ above the anchor
note.

Left hand muting over the sound hole:

On occasion, the left hand is required to play pitches beyond the fretboard, stopped notes above the
range of the fretboard are notated with a line-notehead

The Right Hand

Right-hand timbre gradients:

Sul tasto Over the frets (between the 12th and 19th)

Nat. Between the soundhole and bridge

Flautando Right-hand plucking position over the 12th Fret

Pizzicato:

Pizzicato on the guitar requires the right-hand thumb to pluck the strings, and the right-hand palm to
then mute them. Indicated by the abbreviation pizz and signals the onset of pizzicato while nat.
signals its cancellation.
