THE NATURE OF WRITING

What is writing?
• Writing can also be thought of as “thinking made visible”.
• Writing is primarily about organizing information and communicating meaning.
• Writing is a recursive process.
…Writing is not a highly organized linear process, but rather a continual movement
(Gardner & Johnson, 1997).
Writing…
• is thinking.
• is about organizing one’s ideas
• is unique to each individual.
• is a cyclical and a continuous process.
• is meant to be read.
This millennium has been coined the “writing-est” of times… Words fly over the airwaves at
the blink of an eye. With each new technology advance, the speed increases and so does pressure
(Miller, 2006)

Why write?
 To communicate feelings, emotions, ideas
(It is inevitable.)
 To record data and events
(for documentation.)
 To preserve memories and ideas
(It is permanent.)
 To elaborate, explain ideas
(It is systematic.)
