ACKNOWLEDGEMENT

First I pay my gratitude to the almighty for giving me the ability to work hard successfully. It is a great and unique pleasure to me that I have got a chance to
thank a large number of individuals for their help and encouragement to make the internship successful.

The internship opportunity I had with Raghav Patel Architects (RPA) was a great chance for learning and professional development. Therefore, I consider
myself as a very lucky individual as I was provided with an opportunity to be a part of it. I am also grateful for having a chance to meet so many wonderful
people and professionals who led me though this internship period.

I am using this opportunity to express my deepest gratitude and special thanks to Ar. Raghav Patel (the principal architect of RPA) and ID. Ramesh Lohar
who in spite of being extraordinarily busy with his duties, took time out to hear, guide, keeping me on the correct path and allowing me to carry out my project
at their esteemed organization. I express my deepest thanks to Ar. Ashish Prajapati (senior architect) and Ar. Disha Shah (Junior Architect) for taking part in
useful decision & giving necessary advices and guidance and arranged all facilities to make life easier. I choose this moment to acknowledge his contribution
gratefully.

Last but not the least I would like to convey my gratitude to my parents for constantly supporting me in all the decisions I made.

I perceive this opportunity as a big milestone in my career development. I will strive to use gained skills and knowledge in the best possible way, and I will
continue to work on their improvement, in order to attain desired career objectives.

ABOUT THE CITY – AHMEDABAD
8
'Ahmedabad is a gharana of architecture in itself' - Christopher Charles Benninger

Amdavad formerly Ahmedabad is the largest city and former capital of the Indian state of
Gujarat. With a population of more than 5.8 million and an extended population of 6.3 million,
it is the fifth largest city and seventh largest metropolitan area of India.
Ahmedabad is located on the banks of the River Sabarmati, 32 km (20 mi) from the state
capital Gandhinagar.

The city has large populations of Hindus, Muslims and Jains, and these cultures are preeminent in the
city and it reflect in the architecture of the city itself.

The architecture of Ahmedabad ranges from the ancient to the very modern. Early in the
city’s history, under Ahmed Shah, builders fused Hindu craftsmanship with Persian
architecture, giving rise to the Indo-Saracenic style.
Many mosques in the city were built in this fashion. Sidi Saiyyed Mosque is one of the most
famous mosques in Gujarat. The mosque was built in the last year of the Sultanate of Gujarat.
It is entirely arcuate and it has ten stone latticework windows (jalis) on the side and rear
arches.
Mughal architecture style can also be seen in Jama Masjid, Julta Minara(Sidi Bashir Mosque),
Sarkhej Roza mosque etc.

The Old City of Ahmedabad was planned in such way that the whole town is surrounded by
the wall (That’s why it’s called walled city) which is having the twelve gates. Streets are called
‘Pol’ in this area.
Private mansions (Haveli) from this era have unique carvings and can be seen in these
ancient pol of Ahmedabad.

After independence, modern buildings appeared in Ahmedabad. Notable architects given

commissions in the city included
 Louis Kahn, who designed the IIM-A
 Le Corbusier, who designed the
 Shodhan and Sarabhai Residence
 The Sanskar Kendra
 The Mill Owner’s Association Building,
 Frank Lloyd Wright, who designed the administrative building of Calico Mills and the
Calico Dome.

The man-made Lake Kankaria, built in 1451 AD, is one of the biggest lakes in Ahmedabad. In
earlier days, it used to be known by the name Qutub Hoj or Hauj-e-Kutub. It has an approximate circumference of 1.4 miles (2.3 km) and 34 sides, and is
located in the southern part of the city in Maninagar.

PART B: PROJECTS DONE PART C: EXPERIENCE

ARCHITECTURE PROJECTS: For me Raghav Patel Architects is a great learning environment. Alongside
gaining practical experience within the field, it has also made me more

Working drawings include working plans, electrical layouts, false ceiling

Working with a project leader who led the projects, gave structure to our
working system and allowed us to meet deadlines and targets for each
project. I was first involved in re designing a renovation project of residence.
After some weeks, I was given burden of work which I enjoyed working and
learning. I also gained experience of meetings with clients.

It has given me an insight in to what it is like working for an architectural firm.

I developed new skills, learned how to work in the fast pace environment,
developed relationships with mentors and colleagues.
What I ultimately discovered in my internship was that I was not interested in
doing consulting work but I did enjoy physical land planning, designing. The
best thing about architecture is seeing the final product being built. This is an
important point to note because internships provides an opportunity for
students to test out a career. In my case it meant I would look for future
opportunities as a designer.

Being an architect turned out to be more complicated than it looks,

requiring math skills and technical knowledge of things. I learnt a lot over the
duration of the placement and was able to develop new skills that will help
me in my future studies. I enjoy this career as its exciting, with new tasks.
