Lean Thinking for Schools
chools, non-profits, and service organizations worldwide are
S beginning to realize the benefit of the lean philosophy, an
organizational system used for more than 60 years with
consistent and distinguished success. Adopting lean allows organizations
to continue to manage current processes while engaging in continuous
and sustainable improvement.
Lean focuses on developing excellence through identifying what is of
value to stakeholders and customers and allocating resources to
create value and eliminate waste. Lean has the ability to address a
wide range of problems faced by service-based organizations and
provides tools and techniques to deal with them.
The proven solutions of lean are promoted by the Pawley Learning
Institute at Oakland University’s School of Education and Human
Services. Schools are highly valued in this mission. If you want to learn
more about how to develop the capacity of your school, school district,
or intermediate school district, lean thinking can help you to do that.
PURPOSE
This seminar provides an overview of lean principles and applications
to education. Participants will engage in lean Process Improvement
concepts based on district/institutional goals, in order to create
greater value and eliminate waste within the organizational operation.
The seminar will provide an introduction to lean implementation to
foster the engagement of the professional learning community of
stakeholders through proven methods that result in streamlining
processes, creating and sustaining meaningful collaborative
engagements and increasing employee performance and satisfaction.
WHO SHOULD ATTEND?
School leaders or designees are invited to attend. Business, nonprofit,
government and community leaders collaborating with school
organizations may also attend. School administrators, change leaders,
process champions, teacher leaders and transformation-minded
individuals may take advantage of this introductory seminar.

Pawley Learning Institute, with materials supplied.
WHAT SHOULD I DO PRIOR TO THE SESSION?
There are a few things to do before attending the seminar.
1. Select one of the four registration options, and enroll through
Oakland Schools by October 8, 2008. The registration form is
on the following page.
2. Complete the Tier 1 survey, which will be e-mailed to all
registered participants.
3. Identify a problem, system or process that you believe
could be improved in your organization.
