JOSE RIZAL
REACTION PAPER

1. What is the role of Taviel?

Taviel represents the Spaniards by birth and race but Filipino at heart, as what Rizal had said.

Taviel proves that not all Spaniards are brutal and are blind to justice. He showed Rizal that he had

changed when he finally listened to the truth about what was going on with the country and what

his fellow countrymen had done to the Philippines. The role of Taviel was to defend Rizal’s case

and he did so with great effort but Rizal’s fate was already predetermined regardless of the trial.

2. What is the role of Josephine Bracken?

Josephine provides comfort and security for Rizal. She was his constant and provides stability

for Rizal who’s going through his exile in Dapitan. Josephine looked out for Rizal’s well-being and

vice versa. Josephine as a symbol showed that Rizal is human too and that he loves and hurts just

like us, normal human beings, despite his brilliance he can be vulnerable too.

3. What is the role of the Katipunan?

The Katipunan is the symbol of Filipino nationalism. They fought for the freedom of the country

and its people. That alone shows great love and patriotism to Philippines, since they were ready

to die for the cost of freedom. However, as Rizal said, change can be done without using violence

and the Katipunan embodied that saying. But the suffering they must have experience during

that time sparked deep rage that have resulted in the way they acted. The role of the Katipunan

in Rizal’s life was that they were the people who had been inspired by his writings and had been

fighting for what Rizal’s intention were: freedom.
