LETTER OF MOTIVATION

To Whom It May Concern,

I’m writing this letter to show my desire to apply for the Postgraduate Certificate in
Geothermal Energy Technology (PGCertGeothermTech) and Master of Energy
(MEnergy) programs. In this letter I would like to present my general background and
my reasons for choosing this programme.

My name is Pandu Wicaksono, and I was recently graduated from Institut Teknologi
Bandung, Indonesia. My undergraduate major is Geodesy and Geomatics Engineering,
and my thesis research topic is “Development Study of Landslide Hazard Monitoring
System Using Geodetic Methods for Geothermal Power Plant Area”. There are specific
reasons why I choose that research topic, which is related with my plan of continuing
my study to Master degree.

Indonesia is known as part of the world’s Ring of Fire, because it is crossed by a line of
volcanoes lining across the country. While it brings a potential threat of disaster, it also
has a magnificent potential of renewable energy known as geothermal. The utilizations
of geothermal energy can be used as a solution to fulfill the need of electrical energy
supply that keeps increasing from time to time in Indonesia. With the development of
new technology, geothermal energy also can be used to provide fresh water by
desalinating salt water that is taken from sea. Another interesting fact from geothermal
is that it is considered as an environmental friendly energy, widely known as green
energy, which needs to be developed more and more to reduce the threat of global
warming by the emission of a greenhouse gases.

As mentioned earlier, Indonesia has a great potential of geothermal energy.

Unfortunately, we have only exploit about 3% from the total amount of potential up to 27
Giga Watt equivalent, and 97% usage of the exploited energy are concentrated in Java
Island. Furthermore, Indonesia has 252 potential geothermal areas spread across the
country and most of the exploited areas are managed by foreign companies. It
strengthens the fact that Indonesia faces the inequality of development in most of its
parts and lacks of capability of handling its own resources. Indonesia needs a lot of
experts with a great sense of nationalism and a great plan of its geothermal resources
future development to be able to independently develop its own potentials.

In order to be able to actively contribute in the process, I decided to develop myself to

be an expert in geothermal. Therefore, the first step I have taken to enrich my
knowledge of geothermal is by taking an undergraduate thesis topic that is directly
related with the geothermal industry. The next step I will take is by continuing my study
at PGCertGeothermTech and MEnergy program in University of Auckland (UOA), which
has been acknowledged as a great place to learn about geothermal.

I am sure that UOA is the best place for me to continue my study. I have discussed with
many geothermal experts in Indonesia, and most of them recommend me to enroll to
this program. I have also read the description of the programs, attending many
educations fair where UOA was participated, to make sure that I have chosen the best
choice. In the end, I believe that the course offered in the programs are simply the ones
that meet my area of interest in geothermal.

I realize that by studying in UOA means that I have to leave my country for a while as an
international student. For me, meeting a new friend, a new culture, a new way of study
is a great opportunity to be able to develop myself. It will be a great, once in a lifetime
experience, that will help me to become a better person. When I finished my study, I will
use every knowledge I have learned and every effort I could do to help Indonesia to
develop and maximize its resource potentials. This is a promise to my beloved country,
Indonesia.
