COURSE SYNOPSIS
Limits, continuity and differentiability. Definition and proofs of important theorems via the
application of    concept.

Power series: radius of convergence, interval of convergence, differentiation and


integration of power series.

Taylor series: expansion of basic functions (e.g., sin x, cos x, log (1 + x), exp (x)).
Taylor’s formula for the remainder, improper integrals, convergence and divergence
tests.

Partial derivatives: total differential, chain rule, implicit function, Maximum and minimum,
Lagrange multiplier.

Multiple integral: iterated integral, variable conversion.

Sequences: introduction to limit of a sequence, limit theorems, techniques of finding


limits and sequence of functions.

COURSE WORK

ASSIGNMENT: There will be 2 written assignments.

Assignment 1: Based on topics in Chapters 15 - 17


Due date – 30th October 2010

Assignment 2: Based on topics in Chapters 11 and 12


Due date – 10th February 2011

NOTE:

All assignments are to be sent to the course instructor at PPPJJ no later than the
due date. Late assignment will not be entertained nor graded unless written
permission has been obtained from the course instructor prior to the due date.
Assignments that have been turned in will NOT be returned, so please photostat
for your copy.

TEST
As part of the continuous assessment of the course, a test will be given during the
intensive course.
Materials that will be tested: Chapter 15 – 17.

INTENSIVE COURSE

An Intensive Course will be held from 29 th November 2010 – 19th December 2010.
Topics to be covered: Chapter 17 and Chapter 11.

FINAL EXAM
Final exam will be held during the month of April 2011.
Materials to be tested: Chapters: 11, 12, 15, 16 and 17.
COURSE GRADE

The final course grade will be based on the following distribution:


Final Exam: 60%
Course work: Assignment 1 and 2 20% 40%
Test 20%
