J-TECH™ ENGINE BRAKE SLAVE LASH ADJUSTMENT CHANGE

It has been determined that misadjustment or loss of engine brake slave lash may result in
breakage of engine brake components and damage to the engine valve train. To avoid
potential damage, effective with July 2000 engine production, the engine brake slave lash
setting specification was increased from 0.015″ to 0.017″ (0.381 mm to 0.432 mm). The
valve yoke screw and valve lash settings, however, remain unchanged. The engine
information plates were revised to reflect the new adjustment specification January 3, 2001,
beginning with engine serial No. 1A0419.

This new 0.017″ (0.432 mm) slave lash setting must be used whenever a valve adjustment/
engine brake lash adjustment is performed. At that same time, any engine information plate
that is still stamped with the 0.015″ specification should be re-stamped with the new 0.017″
setting. This 0.002″ increase in engine brake slave lash has no adverse effect on J-Tech™
operation or performance.
