Introduction:
The presence of water in the transmission oil is detrimental to the reliability and durability of the internal components.
Contaminated oil has a deteriorating effect on transmission components. Frictional capacity of drive clutch plates can be
greatly reduced as a result of surface film or impregnation and will physically deteriorate clutch plate material.
Allison Transmission Division of General Motors has conducted field investigations of multiple incidents of GM T-6500
series with 2000/2400 Series transmissions with complaints associated with water contaminated ATF (no glycol).
ATD field investigation revealed that the source of water intrusion was at the 90 degree fitting and vent tube on the
transmission case. In the T-6500 trucks, GM truck removed the ATD installed breather and replaced it with a 90 degree
fitting and vent tube. Concentration of water indicates water intrusion at this tube. This also indicates the water source is
more than condensation in the tube.
Inspection Procedures:
Conditions that may indicate water in the oil are:
• Rust or pitted transmission parts concentrated in the vicinity of the breather opening.
• Oil spewing out of transmission breather.
• Steam from breather.
• Appearance: Presence of water in oil when dispersed is a cloudy or gray, pink or strawberry color.

of the transmission, the 90 degree fitting and vent tube must be removed and replaced (refer to illustration
number 5, 6, and 8).
