SUMMATIVE NEWSPAPER REPORT – Noughts and Crosses

GOAL: You will write a newspaper report to combine your knowledge of journalism and
Noughts and Crosses. Your writing must be partially aligned to the text and partially a
fabrication of your own mind.

ROLE: You will take on the role of a Nought or a Cross journalist and write a news story
about the bombing at Dundale Shopping Centre.

AUDIENCE: Newspaper readers in Pangea (mostly Noughts or Crosses, depending on

your role)

SITUATION: You will report the bombing, keeping in mind the prejudice and bias
against Noughts or Crosses. However, bias cannot be explicit as the reporter’s code of
conduct would not allow you to do so. However, your choice of quotes, omissions, etc.
should show the bias. Remember, Ryan has not been convicted yet.

PRODUCT:
The newspaper report must include the following:
1. Heading, Sub-heading
2. By-line
3. Place line: Pangea
4. Lead paragraph (Providing answers to the who, what, where, when questions)
5. At least two body paragraphs that include 2-3 quotes from different people–
from witnesses, the police, Kamal Hadley, etc., either from the book or made up
6. Context given about all persons involved (Don’t assume the reader has any prior
knowledge of people or situations. Remember, Ryan has not been convicted yet.)
7. Remember to include the reaction of the public/society. (How are the
Noughts/Crosses handling this incident? You could use quotes or descriptive
statements.)
8. Two speculations (Can you ignite panic or gossip? Do the police have any leads?
Again, you could use others’ voices/quotes or statements).
9. Write in the past tense to write about what happened earlier, in the present tense
about the current status, and future tense about what one can expect.
