Methods
• An excellent way is the conference technique where the key
people concerned with the planning and execution of the
project meet and discuss different issues .
• Following are the commonly used methods for planning –
• C.P.M
• P.E.R.T
• Bar charts
C.P.M
(Critical Path Method )
• The technique of CPM is devised to plan and manage all types
of construction projects .
• It is known by various terms ,such as network analysis ,critical
path analysis etc
• However ,It is popularly referred as Critical Path Method i.e
CPM .
C.P.M
(Critical Path Method )
• Effective tool for construction engineers ,planners ,cost
estimators ,managers and Directors .
• Major Benefits of CPM are simplicity flexibility and overall
control
• Useful for various managerial functions such as planning
,scheduling and controlling a project and more specially to
determine time schedule of project .
C.P.M
(Critical Path Method )
• The planning part of the project involves the break down of
the project into several smaller tasks (i.e Activities ) that must
be executed in order to complete the project
• The gross requirement of manpower,machine
and material are determined in this phase .
The estimates of cost and duration for various activities and jobs
are also prepared in the planning stage.
How does it work ??? C.P.M
• Network Analysis
• The basic data to be collected before the application of C.P.M
is attempted for a particular project are
• Calculating quantities and costs of all possible items of the
project
• Estimating the normal time required to complete each
operation .Thus the normal cost and time data for each
operation is worked out .
How does it work ??? C.P.M
• The basic info is received and revised through various possible
steps to complete the project in the most economic way .
• The variations which might be considered include the use of
alternative equipments changing of gangs of workers
,adopting better construction methods ,increasing the working
hours etc

P.E.R.T ( Program Evaluation and
Review Technique )
• This techniques introduces the element of uncertainity into
time estimates of all the activities of a project .
• Basically PERT is required where utility data is not available &
where activities associated with the project require R & D of
particular project .
• Hence This is not commonly used for smaller & simpler
construction projects .
BAR CHART
• Bar chart of a particular building/project from
commencement right through to completion ,can be prepared
as per the requirement and priority of particular building .
• If RCC work is complete then masonry & other work
completion can be planned and bar chart for all further
activities can be prepared according to the schedule work

• A bar chart may be raised at various stages of work according
to the requirements like –
*Bar Chart for Complete Building
*Bar Chart after RCC works
*Bar Chart after masonry /plaster work
*Bar Chart at the time of possession
