The alphabet is the channel intersections, numbers are the lot number and the arrows are flow
direction.
Lot 1, 4, 5 and 6 are fully developed, while lot 2 and 3 are still in development. The land
characteristics data for each lot and channel are as follows.
Lot Land use Slope Hathaway n Channel Manning slope
1 Closed multi-unit housing 0.0003X 0.2 AB 0.01Z 0.0003Y
2 uneven, sandy clay, grass field 0.0003Y 0.4 CB 0.01Z 0.0003Y
3 flat, gravel and sand, no vegetation 0.0006Z 0.4 BD 0.01Z 0.0003Y
4 Spaced multi-unit housing 0.0005X 0.2 DE 0.01Z 0.0003Y
5 Closed multi-unit housing 0.0004Y 0.2 EF 0.01Z 0.0003Y
6 Closed multi-unit housing 0.0007Z 0.2 FG 0.01Z 0.0003Y
All of the fully developed lot have a 20% area dedicated for green space and 20% area of asphalt
road space.
Equation for Rainfall Intensity:
𝑨
𝑰=
√𝒕 + 𝑩
A : 508.ZX
B : 0.6YZ
t : time of concentration (minute)
Tasks:
1. Calculate the discharge at each channel!
2. Calculate the dimension of each channel! (Freeboard 0.2m)
3. Based on the “work-you-did”, explain the correlation between land development and time
of concentration! (Provide comparison using numbers you already have)
4. In the event that a channel design failed and flooding starts to happen, to mitigate the
flood is it more effective to deepen or widen the channel? Explain!
Note:
Read carefully before doing the assignment
Provide calculation examples
Summarize all the final results in a table
Limit discharge calculation result to 4 decimals, and a decimal for dimensions
