Praxis Core Analysis

Exam Requirements

As a student preparing to take the next step in my academic career by pursuing my

bachelor's degree in education, successfully passing the Praxis Core Exams is essential. The

Praxis Core exams are prerequisites for admittance into education programs at the University

Nevada Las Vegas and Western Governors University Nevada; two universities I am currently

considering. Additionally, it is a requirement for teacher certification in the state of Nevada.

On a personal note, I have a genuine belief in the necessity of this requirement.

The Praxis exam standards ensure that I have mastered the necessary pedagogical core subject

material. Reaching this benchmark attests that I possess the foundational knowledge and skill-set

that is crucial to my success as a future educator. On January 12, 2018, I successfully passed the

Core Praxis Reading Exam with a score of 194. Passing scores for all three Core Praxis

Academic Skills Exams are as follows, Reading (5712) 156, Writing (5722) 162, and

Mathematics (5732) 150 (Wyckoff, 2018).

Exam Preparation

Before passing the Praxis reading exam and enrolling in EDU 299, I acquired and utilized

various resources to supplement my Praxis study plan. I continued to use these materials to

prepare for the Teacher Test Prep Praxis practice test (Teachers Test Prep, 2018.) Items that I

have purchased include the Cirrus 2018-2019 Praxis Core Study Guide, (Cirrus, 2017) and

Educational Testing Service’s (ETS) preparation tests for the mathematics and writing exams.

Before attempting the Teachers Test Prep practice test, I reviewed and studied the concepts and

problems covered in the mathetics and writing portion of the Cirrus Guide. Furthermore, I

purchased the ETS mathematics and writing practice tests to prepare for the Teachers Test Prep

practice tests and my remaining Praxis exams.

Exam Results

My score on the “Teachers Test Prep” Praxis writing exam, version 1, was eighty

percent, which corresponds to a rating of “likely to pass.” (Teachers Test Prep, 2018). After

reviewing the free basic diagnostic offered by Teachers Test Prep, I was able to pinpoint my

weaknesses and use this knowledge to adjust my study plan accordingly. My score on the

“Teachers Test Prep” math exam, version 1, was sixty-eight percent, which corresponds to a

rating of “needs improvement.” My total math score, found in the “total result breakdown”

module reflects a rating of “ borderline.” The diagnostic breakdown of my math score into four

distinct categories revealed, “substantial improvement needed” in geometry, “borderline” in

algebra function, “borderline” in statistics and probability, and “very likely” in number and

quantities (Teachers Test Prep, 2018). Fortunately, I will be strengthening my areas of greatest

weakness (geometry) this semester in Math 120.

Future Exam Preparation

One of the most valuable lessons I have attained over the years as a student is to

understand the necessary preparation and self-evaluation that is needed to pass exams

successfully. Following a practical and well-designed study plan that includes reliable resources,

and goals with clear objectives is a must. Many organizations and companies exist, with a

multitude of products and services to assist with studying for the Praxis, including Teachers Test

Prep, ETS, and Cirrus. I will continue to use the services and products offered by these

companies as I prepare to take my future Praxis exams.

However helpful resources are still only resources. It is up to me to push myself

triumphantly through the finish line. Being self-disciplined and consistent with my study habits

is the second most important component of my exam success. Never losing sight of the reason(s)

for passing the exams; my future students, success as a teacher, making a difference, in other

words, focusing on my motivations is the primary essential component.
