CHAPTER I
INTRODUCTION

BACKGROUND OF THE STUDY

A good sanitization and cleaning leads to proper health of human beings including the effects of

the environment and surrounding. In recent years until to this present day, the major problem

which Philippines face is cleanliness. The trash and dirt on the street as well as plastic bottles and

other pieces on the road are a problem for human beings.

In the Philippines, Manila being one of the highest polluted cities with a rating of 91.76 in the

pollution index as shown below:

The cause of this rating is due to the lack of responsibility of most Filipinos. No matter how

educated people are they still couldn’t apply simple way of disposing their trash. Based on the

observation on the environment and surroundings it is already typical for the community to see

countless waste along streets resulting to clogging drains that causes flood.

Given by this issue street sweepers are employed to provide services in collecting disseminated

trash around the area. They use the traditional way of cleaning using “walis ting-ting” and dust
pan which consumes too much time and eventually affects their posture due to applying

traditional method of cleaning.

This served as an inspiration to the pioneers to design and fabricate a machine that will lessen

time consumed in sweeping and reduce human efforts. Assembling components applying

working on the principle of applied science to overcome issues of cleanliness in the Philippines,

the road cleaner plays a vital role. The machine is composed of an exceptional dustpan which is

made from a type of polymer, three detachable brushes with different uses, and a tri-bike for the

ease of usage. Most of this components will be applied in the design with various understanding

of mechanical methods. The motive is to present a detailed study of cleaning system using road

cleaner, to apply sanitation and cleanliness with minimum utilization of resources available to us.

Objectives of the Study

The objective of this study is to help the economy to maintain its cleanliness and to aid

the country from the clogging of drains along the streets by using an innovated road cleaner that

easily collects all the scraps around the streets. This also aims to aid the street sweepers from

doing a very exhausting cleaning and also to help them conserve a lot of time.

Related Literature

There are several list of machines that have been invented that would clean the mess

easily. Also, there are many designs that have been completed that could help the designer to

look for innovation and improvement for the idea of cleaning any mess easily. This design could
solve any problems with regards of cleaning the road and deals with water on pavements. Below

are some researches that show the functions and characteristics that the design could look up

to.

Road Cleaning Machine CS 140 Twin Action

Combines the performance of two machines in one single particularly compact machine,

thus providing two actions in one solution and ensuring maximum quality results. The innovative

combined “Twin Action” system developed by Comac includes the central brush and two screw

conveyors which operate simultaneously with suction operation to guarantee maximum

efficiency in dirt collection: while mechanical action collects waste, suction action draws in even

the finer dust. With a working width of 1400 mm, CS 140 is suitable to clean urban areas, such as

roads or parking spaces and industrial areas, such as metallurgy plants and cement factories; the

Twin Action system allows operation even on bumpy road surfaces, since no rigid element is in

contact with the ground. As a consequence tree roots or protruding manholes are not a problem.

Moreover the hydraulic support and the presence of the flaps, ensure a constant pressure on the

ground for the brush independently of wear or the terrain, for maximum cleaning results. CS 140

Twin Action is equipped with Industrial Open Power engine version which is specifically sized for

continuous applications at constant speed with reduced consumption: for this reason it is suited

to continuous heavy-duty work, even for a daily cycle of eight hours non-stop.

CS 140 Twin Action uses the central brush continuously, thereby ensuring higher quality

cleaning because it is uniform for the entire width of the brush. In view of the innovative system

which concentrates work on the central brush and limits the use of the side brushes, the machine

comes standard equipped with only the right side brush, while the left brush is optional. As a

consequence the use of water is significantly reduced, since it is employed only in a nebulized

form limited to the external part of the side brushes in order to control flying dust, without

wetting the ground. The third brush is also available, useful to collect debris from areas far from

the machine. The large filtering surface and the efficiency of the dusty air intake distribution

system over the entire surface ensure continuity of performance over time: these characteristic

together with the materials chosen (polyester and cotton) and the action of the two filter shaking

ensure the return of perfectly clean air into the environment.

Bowdry MK III

The Bowdry MK III collects up to 60 litres of water per minute and, due to its improved

ergonomic design, is even simpler to operate, transport and store. Bowdry MK III offers a light
and strong surface water removal solution that ensures sporting fixtures can continue when

under normal conditions, standing water would prevent play.

Bowdry MK III

Bowdry MK III incorporates a wider, durable foam roller that efficiently absorbs the water

and does not damage turf. An integrated storage tank collects the excess water and can then be

easily emptied from a valve located on the side panel. Bowdry MK III also retains a four wheel

chassis that evenly distributes the weight, ensuring effective water removal is achieved even on

the finest turf.

Theoretical Framework

Conceptual Framework
Statement of the Problem

The purpose of the Road Cleaner is to reduce the cost, human efforts as well as time-

spent. It is the best alternative for automated road cleaning machine during power crisis. The

following questions may determine the answers:

 What materials will be used to know if the design is safe to use?

 How to hand problem due to continuously sweeping occur?

 The countless waste that are disseminated along the streets.

 How to accommodate human energy needed?

 How can it work efficiently with respect to covering area, time, and cost of road cleaning

process compared with the existing machineries?

 Difficulty of the street sweepers on cleaning the streets by using the traditional way

 Collecting the trash in the most efficient way

Hypotheses

The road cleaner’s design will benefit and meet the human satisfaction. It is designed not

only to clean mess and debris, but also to collect water on the surface due to rain and other

possible reasons. The design is to be powered by only means of human-effort, as it will be a

vehicle, more specifically, a cycle mounted together with the road cleaner.
Significance of the Study

Scope and Delimitations

The innovated road cleaner machine is widely used for streets, parks and fields. This device

operates fully mechanical by using a tri-bike.
