Elements of Design Sketchbook Activities

Follow the instructions for each of the following. Use magazines to search
for examples of each element listed below. Use one page per element, you
may need the back of the page if your images are too big.

Line: find 1 example that shows line. Explain how the line is
being used on the page. (How does it lead the eye?)

Shape: Name the type of shape (geometric or organic), then


explain why you think that the designer chose that specific
shape.

Color: Find 1 example each of warm and cool color schemes;


glue them into your sketchbook. Explain the effect that the color
scheme has on the page.

Value: Find 1 example each of high key and low key; glue them
into your sketchbook. Explain the effect that each has on the
page.

Texture: Find 1 example that shows texture; glue it into your


sketchbook. Name the texture (soft, hard, rough, etc.) and
explain the effect that each has on the page.

Space: Find one example that shows a lot of negative space and
one that shows a lot of positive space; glue them into your
sketchbook. Explain the effect that each has on the page.
